Mega engineers propose dome over entire city of Houston, Texas

Per Huliq News, a team of mega engineers have proposed a giant bubble to shield the weather-battered city of Houston and protect its environment for years to come. The Houston dome could protect the fourth most populous city in the United States from severe storms that it is susceptible to, including hurricanes and tornadoes.

Dome

The article was based on a Discovery Channel special on the prospect. This screenshot of the proposed “Houston Dome” was taken from the Discovery Channel Web site, where users can explore the dome’s various features.

Twitterers in Houston were intrigued by the idea and offered a wide range of opinions:

  1. Gabriel Rego
NASA_GCR (Houston, Texas) In discovery putting downtown houston under a dome… LOL lord WTF are they talking about!
  2. Jimmy Newland
jimmynewland (Houston, Texas) Show on Discovery suggests building a geodesic dome over Houston as storm defense.
  3. Alexander James
alexjamesmusic (Houston, Texas) Watching a program on Discovery called Mega Engineering and they’re talking about Houston constructing a DOME OVER THE ENTIRE CITY!?
  4. Louisa Renfrew-Hill
LouisaRH (Houston, Texas) Channel clicking-Discovery’s “Mega Engineering” episode is “Dome over Houston” to protect & A/C H-town. Um, it’s called The Simpsons Movie.
  5. Garret Fitzpatrick
gfitz (Houston, Texas) Cool! Watching Discovery channel show “Mega Engineering” about a concept of putting a huge dome over the entire city of Houston.
  6. Jason Seats
seats (Houston, Texas) Build a giant geodesic dome around Houston? http://twurl.nl/oxdfp7 Why travel when you can have all the comforts of space living in Texas?

Others around the country expressed skepticism and disbelief that the idea is actually being considered.

  1. Chris Cox
Chris_Cox (Greenville, S.C.) Watched a show about a dome being built over the entire city of Houston for hurricane protection. Really?
  2. Jah Rawlings
jahtheceo (Atlanta, Ga.) They are trying to build a dome over the entire downtown houston this shit is crazy…..
  3. Shaun King
shaunking (Atlanta, Ga.) Watching a documentary on a dome being built over the city of Houston and they are talking like it’s already agreed upon. True or not?
  4. Monica McGuire
mrm813 (Undisclosed) was completely unaware that a dome was being built to cover Houston! Did anyone else know this?
  5. Heather Barnett
HireHeather (Fort Worth, Texas) Watching a documentary about building a dome over the city of Houston. Why does that sound like a really bad (and dangerous) idea?
  6. Brent D. Payne
BrentDPayne (Chicago, Ill.) Really? A dome over all of Houston? Houston, I think that’s a terrorist target and a half. http://tr.im/nRyH

Brilliant, let's hold all the air pollution from vehicles and people inside a dome, so Houston can develop a huge smog problem, and begin to smell a bit more like Tijuana.  Presumably the city will have to pay for an army of people to clean all the bird crap and other assorted stuff off the outside of it, in addition to the army which will be necessary to maintain it.  All that, AND the added risk it could collapse during a storm or other disaster and cause incredible damage and loss of life to the entire city?  What a deal!
  • even if you could engineer and build a dome to protect downtown Houston,
it really wouldn’t do much to protect the city of Houston or its
    people. So what’s the point?

    BBIIIIIG OOOOOO!!!!!
  • There are many online DVD and audio’s available for kids and adults. Such synergistic DVD’s are a best way to pick up grammar. Also, you can find many websites that offer video games to help children learn Spanish.

Its one of the best engineering projects and man made object I have ever come to know of.. yes it is dangerous.. but if taken care of, then what's there to be scared of??

Interesting....dome city.....okay, like in the NWO movie Zardoz

  • Houston Dome will take years of construction and billions of dollars. The Dome is designed to protect a city from a category-5 hurricane. The ETFEpanels and the space-frame steel structure that supports them are the key. ETFE can withstand winds of 180 miles per hour. This is higher velocity than the strongest category 5 hurricane.

bad idea i think people will sufficate wit a big azz plastic lookin dome ova every thing
  • To build the dome will require innovative engineering and construction on an unprecedented scale, with lessons, materials, and techniques drawn from around the world. From the Eden Project, the world's largest geodesic domes, to a tiny factory in Bremen, Germany, which manufactures a revolutionary plastic, the idea of a city-sized dome could finally become a reality.
  • Those here making chicken little, need to read first , because the technology is very interesting and likely accurate, - or really 'watch' the discovery special. The technology is explained in minute detail, so do yourselves a favor and watch/read it before commenting.

Edification matters, don't waste it ;)

a huge dome over Texad!!!! thats a pretty dumb idea, the government is always tring something new and their excuse is "its for hurrican protection" What a lame excuse and for the people of texas to fall for that they are pretty stupid. this is all apart of a new way for the government to lock people in one area or are hide something that they dont want texas to find out about, and the dome is thier distraction. open your eyes people this world is full of masked men with lies. dont fall for it!!!!!!! Email me if you have any questions... (ABDULABDUL14@YAHOO.COM)
  • Hi, i'm maximiliano malvido from Argentina, Córdoba. I just saw the documentary on discovery channel, and I wondered, as solve the problem of how different plants would survive, and that is so large as to control houston as a biome.

If you think it's hot in Houston now, wait until it's covered by a dome.

Any doubts? Sit in a closed car with no A-C operating.

  • Festeringasswhart
Except that there are vents built into it that actually create a airflow through the vent. It would actually be cooler under the dome so you are completely incorrect.

Thats from the same show about floating new orleans

    Why Houston?

Mayb coz houston is lyk..so populous n ovrheated. according 2 fuller, the temp. inside the dome will be 50% lower than temp. outside the dome.......isnt that gr8?????

"DOME GEOMETRY: The structure is made of hexagons stacked in a honeycomb pattern. But to make the surface curve, 12 pentagons are strategically positioned to give the surface a dome shape."
    http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/me...

This is in itself suspicious since you don't need a pentagon to make a dome

Who is going to finance this project. I got excited when I saw the show. It's a crazy idea for most of the people I have mentioned it to. It's about time that USA is going to spend money to build land marks like this. I would to be part of it if I am still alive whenit happens. It will create more jobs and yes we lots of Engineering company here in Houston....... so why not come together and build a ginormous DOME. When you start one the rest will follow...... Who knew that computer would be part of our lives. I am sure computers was a crazy idea before but look us now, we rely on computers.

Hey, why not just float the entire city. Then just relocate it in the advent of inclement weather.
