Basij cracks down on protesters, conducts raids in Tehran
One day removed from “Bloody Saturday,” as Twittering Iranians are calling June 20, Sunday was mostly quiet, at least in Tehran according to the latest Twitter updates from reliable accounts.
The death toll Saturday after clashes between protesters and security forces varies depending on who you believe: 10 (Iran state media), 13 (Iranian Press TV) and 19 (CNN/hospital sources) are the most widely reported. Some Iranians on Twitter said they believe the number to be much higher. Iran state media did report that 100 were wounded, but the severity of those injuries are not known.
Among the dead Saturday was Neda, a young woman who died innocently at her father’s side. Her death was documented on YouTube and story featured on CNN, who says she has become a rallying cry for Iranians who continue to protest. Many Twitterers honored her memory Sunday and said her death will not be forgotten, as #Neda became a trending topic.
Here is the latest information from credible Iranian Twitterers on events Sunday:
- Members of the Basij raided homes of protesters and leaders of opposition and made further arrests
- Basij blocked off foreign embassies so those who tried to get to them could not
- A demonstration was held at the United Nations building in Tehran, but it was broken up by Basij; some protesters were attacked
- The social networking site Digg was banned, the latest of many sites to be blocked, while independent news source Ghalam News appears to have been hacked
- More protests are planned for Monday, but details have not been released so authorities will have less time to prepare for them
- A national strike is being planned, possibly for Tuesday; details will emerge when the time is right
- It was announced that the nation will mourn for protesters who have died for three days, Wednesday through Friday
Rumors of tanks in Azadi Square and Mir Hossein Mousavi being arrested also surfaced, but so far, they seem to be untrue.
