Iranians vow to head back to the streets
Per Reuters, a security crackdown in Tehran has brought mass protests to a halt in recent days, as hundreds of riot police and Basij militiamen continue to line the streets and harass potential protesters.
In addition, the Guardian Council has ruled that no re-vote will take place, essentially ending hopes for a re-election, per The Huffington Post.
Despite all of this, Al-Jazeera reports that reformist candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, who lost the disputed election to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has called for a protest to be held Wednesday in Tehran’s main square. Mousavi’s Twitter feed confirmed on Tuesday that the protest is planned for 4 p.m. local time at the Baharestan Square.
Reliable Iranian Twitterers were as vocal as ever about this protest and specifically dedicated it to Neda, the young woman whose death was captured on video. Though some voiced concerns that security forces could intimidate protesters, others made it clear they must make their voices heard and remained optimistic. They say it will be a “Sea of Green” demonstration.
Trusted Twitterers in Iran said the national strike planned for today was somewhat successful. Various bazaars and businesses were closed in major cities throughout the country. But due to a lack of communication, it does not appear to have been as successful as some had hoped, at least on day one. Many Twitterers called for the strikes to continue through the rest of the week, perhaps indefinitely, and urged oil workers to join the strike to cripple the Iranian economy and current government.
In other news Tuesday, U.S. President Barack Obama delivered his harshest words yet toward the Iranian government, saying he was “appalled and outraged” by its latest crackdown. He also said that Iran had to choose whether to continue its acts of injustice or rejoin the international community.
