Honduras president Manuel Zelaya ousted from power

Per The New York Times, the Honduras army stormed the presidential palace in Tegucigalpa on Sunday, disarmed the presidential guard, and forced President Manuel Zelaya into exile, flying him to Costa Rica. It is the first military coup in Central America since the end of the Cold War.

Congress has accepted an apparent resignation letter from Zelaya, though he publicly denied signing the letter on CNN, calling it “totally false,” per USA Today.

Twitterers in Honduras provided their vantage point of developments today, for some time a chaotic scene:

  • Who are you people? A public referendum on an additional presidential term for Zalaya was about to begin when him was arrested and sent out of the country. This democratic process was thwarted by a coup (yes,it's a coup, and you can call it anything else you’d like) but it just a coup, an illegal takeover of power, the Honduran Supreme Court notwithstanding.

    I just returned from a twelve day trip to Honduras, and the press in the US has it backwards. Our government is not supporting the Democracy in Honduras! The constitution and law were followed by the government of Honduras to remove a president who had abused his power and wanted to be a Chavez style dictator. Things were very peaceful where I was on Sunday, and everyone that I spoke with supported the removal of Zelaya. Please for the sake of the people of Honduras support their democracy!!!!

    It's perplexing why the US would back Mr. Zelaya over the will of the Honduran people to protect their democratic constitution.To bypass their congress in order to retain his own hold on power.If this were to happen in the US there would be all out war.Turn to Iran where the world community praised the millions who had a brief taste of freedom against a tyranical regime.Yet,Hondurans don't have this right. The world should'nt
    treat Hondurans as if they do not know what is in the best interest of their soverign nation.I remember a coup that had happened in place called the Soviet Union.When the world cheered on tanks as they lobbed shells at parliament.Look what was gained in that instance.Obama,the UN,among others should stand back,and let the Hondurans practice free will

    This is a legal removal of a president whom is in violation of the Honduran Constitution.

    Zelaya's actions of the past 5 months have been in blantant disregard for the Honduran Constituion, which he sought to rewrite, the Honduran Supreme Court, which he has undermined, the Honduran Congress, which he has tried to delegitimize,the Honduran Military, which he has tried to purge, his own party that has resisted Hug Chavez, and 72% of the Honduran public, that feel disenfranchised by Zelaya. This was not a coup. Zelaya was legally removed by the military at the request of the Honduran Congress and the Honduran Supreme Court that have the following two articles of the Honduran Constitution as the legal authority to do so;

    ARTICULO 239.- El ciudadano que haya desempeñado la titularidad del Poder Ejecutivo no podrá ser Presidente o Designado.
    El que quebrante esta disposición o proponga su reforma, así como aquellos que lo apoyen directa o indirectamente, cesarán de inmediato en el desempeño de sus respectivos cargos, y quedarán inhabilitados por diez años para el ejercicio de toda función pública.

    Why is Obama now meddling in the internal affairs of a soveriegn nation and why is he siding with Hugo Chavez against the nation of Honduras?

    It seems Zeleya was trying to implement his own coup. Look it up folks...Coup d'etat- a sudden and decisive change of government illegally. And what was Zeleya trying to do? Change the constitution of Hondurus by refusing to step down as president. He was removed from office because he was trying to change the law. Obama should butt out.

    To all those who don't like Zelaya here: if you respect democracy and you want him out, you follow democratic channels. This was a coup, and there is no justifcation for that kind of lawlessness in a TRUE democracy. Please understand that. It is irrelevant whether you like HIM or not, you have to like DEMOCRACY more!!!!!!
