Mousavi, Karroubi, Khatami remain defiant despite warnings
Despite rising threats against opposition leaders, including arrest or other forms of punishment, the reformist candidates who finished behind Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Iran’s presidential election continue to speak out against the election results.
On Wednesday, according to AFP and Independent.ie:
- Mir Hossein Mousavi renewed his demand for a re-vote, something Iran’s highest legislative body the Guardian Council has said will not happen. He also called for freedom of assembly and freedom of speech.
- Mehdi Karroubi had his newspaper, Etemad Melli, shut down after he called the election results invalid and Ahmadinejad’s presidency illegitimate.
- Ayatollah Mohammed Khatami, former president of Iran, also spoke out against the election results
