Major riot takes place at Chino State Prison in California

A major riot took place at Chino State Prison, also known as the California Institution for Men, Saturday night in Chino, San Bernardino County, California, according to multiple Twitter reports.

The event began late Saturday, with the first tweets on the incident appearing around 8 or 9 p.m. local time.

Multiple Twitterers say that the riot has led to fires. Some say it started as a race-motivated altercation between Hispanics and African-Americans at the prison, but that can not be confirmed at this time.

One Twitter account that provides updates on fires and emergency situations provided a series of updates on the riot:

socalincidents
: Some prisoners throwing objects at guards, fires still burining out of control, maximum security section is the location of the riots

socalincidents: The prison riot in chino is still ongoing, less than 100 inmates still out of controll, the rest are cooperating with authorities.

Another Twitter account claimed to have inside information, which of course can not immediately be confirmed.

And the governator has the nerve to cut out pay 15%....What do you expect???? for us to go in and put our lives at stake when our pay gets cut 980.00 a month??? i say let them fight. hope no officers are injured.
  • muertomania
No officers hurt. Just to the readers who do not understand the inside of a prison. The ratio is 200 inmates to 1 officer. The West Yard housing units are dorms. Rows of bunks not gym style where it would be easier to contol the unit. It really is the worst set up for a housing unit. The officers have a small office in the center of the unit with inmate bunks are lined up to the left and right, complete blind spots. In order for officers to leave the office they have to get past the fighting inmates first. Riots are loud, violiet situations. Try to imagine these convicted grown and strong men trying to kill eachother. They are pumped up and not going to comply with the officers. They turn on the officers when the officers try and help them. Also, not all the inmates want to be involved. They are scared too but what can officers do but step back regroup, and gear then go in and try to help the injured. The inside of a prison is much more than anyone from the outside can begin to understand. The inmates don't just fight during a riot. They flood the units and destroy everything around them. They burn mattresses, blankets, tear out the plumbing, anything can become a weapon. The inmates mind set is kill or be killed. If an inmate is white he has a chance in this riot. Everything has to do with race. If you are black and you don't want to get involved you don't have the choice, you are involved. Same goes for the Mexicans. During a race riot you are nothing but a color to the other race even if you are that o'kay guy any other day. If you don't fight your own race will make sure you get hit later.

Be thankful you still have a job. Maybe if you would of got real about prison reform we would not be in this mess. If every other state can do it why is California any different. What we have more bad guys than other states? New York is closing prisons, why, because they made the reform that was needed. Our prison employee's and there union are out of control and if you have not noticed a lot of California's are waking up and seeing that maybe we are locking up folks that should not be in a cage for the next 25 to life. 4,530 this is the number of three strikers that do not have a violent crime and we have locked them up for 25 to life. How much is that going to cost us? Reform the laws, prisons and parole. Stop using fear to pass laws we can not pay for.

Yes, that is what I expect you to do. It is your job, Be careful with your comments You never know who will be reading them. If you are not going to do your job then maybe we need to cut your pay a little more, hopefully right into the unemployed line.

And you think im going to go in and help for straight time.......haha let the governator get his behind there to help....
  • lilma321
i just got word that things aren't as bad as media showin and things are getting controlled
  • ckanal
Good to hear. Thanks for posting.
  • chatitup
The guards are not just letting the inmates fight. They have to wait to go in and try to take control when it is safe. It wouldn't be safe for 5 officers with limited gear to go into an area of inmates numbering over 200, would it?
  • Get A clue
I understand what you are saying. But when you have a co-worker posting stuff like this what do you want the general public to think.

Whats retarded is that prison guards can work as guards and be on felony probation. Google Jesse Rincon at Salinas Valley State prison.
  • TaroCake
No, you are still what is retarded.
  • lisastar
They are roaming around within prison grounds you idiot. Watch the news.
  • TaroCake
Unfortunately, I do know the news, which is why this whole thing is so disgusting. Being educated on the situation pretty much makes me the opposite of an idiot. Not a single person on here has said that they are roaming prison grounds- they merely state that they are roaming around, implying that they are unconfined.

CIM is pretty big- they aren't roaming "prison grounds", there are a small group that are roaming CIM West, a more specific and smaller portion than "prison grounds".
  • Disgusted
Maybe if you watched the news you'd realize that the majority of the inmates in the section that is rioting is actually complying with officers. The inmates "roaming around" are in one section of a very large prison, and they are a small percentage of the inmates in that yard. Before you go around calling people idiot maybe you should pay closer attention so you'll actually know what you're talking about.
  • lisastar
I never said all the inmates were roaming. All it takes is a few out of control to do alot of damage. As long as any are roaming it is an uncontrolled riot.
  • ckanal
Exactly. Hope TaroCake sees that. Thanks Lisastar.
  • Disgusted
You people are so retarded. It's people like you that blow things ridiculously out of proportion and spread rumors and falsehoods when you really have no idea what is going on. You know nothing about the prison itself, how it works, or what procedure is. It is insulting to the men and women who serve at the prison to insinuate that they would allow inmates to murder each other while they are sitting twiddling their thumbs. You sicken me.
  • ckanal
Certainly, some Twitterers' comments may not have been appropriate, but it is what it is..
  • Disgusted
I'm sorry, but I didn't realize that calling someone a murderer by proxy was an issue of propriety - it has to do with irresponsible retards smearing the names of peace officers who are only trying to do their jobs. These are serious accusations that they are making and they are just spouting them off like it's nothing.
  • ckanal
    I agree with you there.
  • lisastar
    Is it under control yet?
  • ckanal
It appears to be, but no confirmation. Just know that an incident occurred.
  • TaroCake
This is retarded- the riot was at CIM West, which is minimum/medium security. The building is concrete, so the fire is located in the roof and the air ducts. No one is roaming around, because they would have to be electrocuted by the fence before they could get off prison grounds. Twitter isn't a reliable source, y'all.
  • ckanal
No one is saying every tweet is 100% credible - in fact, disclaimers are posted above about info being unconfirmed - but certainly the basic facts are true. And this is yet to be reported by CNN and elsewhere so Twitter does appear to be a good way to track breaking news.
  • TaroCake
It's not being reported by CNN because it is local news. Channel 11 is covering is sporadically, because if it wasn't, no one would know about it. It isn't too difficult to discern what tweets may be credible- anyone claiming that their incarcinated loved ones are calling them aren't credible- do you realistically think that if the situation is as bad as they are saying it is, inmates will be able to make phone calls? Do you think each inmate is given a cellphone upon being processed? Please.

Also, facts isn't a loose term open to interpretation- the "facts" here are totally incorrect. No one here is running rampant or murdering each other with abandon. THEN it would be big news and twitter wouldn't be your source.
  • ckanal
The facts are there is a riot underway. And there are fires of some kind. Possible fatalities. Trust me, TaroCake, if it was 3 p.m. EST instead of 3 a.m. EST, this would be all over the cable news networks. A prison riot, and more and more seems like a racial riot, this is news, my friend. And it will make headlines tomorrow, you'll see soon enough.
  • TaroCake
The only way this will be on any major news channel (barring local news) is if there is a fatality involving an officer. Unless you have some insider info that nobody knows about, you are jumping to some pretty big conclusions there, buddy.

Making the headlines of the Chino Champion or Daily Bulletin doesn't count.
  • ckanal
I definitely think it would get national attention normally... But since it is overnight, it's hard to say. The story loses some steam if it turns out nothing major comes of it and it gets under control (and hopefully that happens). So we'll see.
  • Disgusted
I didn't realize that every shanking was Fox News' 6 o'clock headline. I must be missing something. Newscasters in NY don't give a crap about a single inmate from Chino. They'd much rather talk about how Sonia Sotomayor giggled about the Yankee game during her Supreme Court confirmation hearing. You know, real news.
  • ckanal
Just wanted to let you know it made CNN, AP, etc., in recent minutes... and it even appeared on Web sites for many outlets overseas, which I would have not predicted.
  • bellamami
I'm so worried......my brother has been there for about a month waiting to be sent up North. I hope the inmates are fine?
  • ckanal
Hope so too. Early reports say most inmates are fine and not involved. Time will tell.
