Twitter to developers: API issues to continue indefinitely

Twitter continues to defend against an ongoing DDoS attack and said in a statement to API developers in the last 24 hours that the service “will continue to be shaky.”

Among issues still being reported are widespread problems with Blackberry Twitter client UberTwitter, as well as sporadic errors with Tweetie, TweetDeck, and the Twitter Web site.

Chad Etzel of Twitter Platform Support stressed in a message to developers that “There is no ETA on fixing any of this,” repeating the phrase twice.

“I know that sounds harsh and cold, but if you want us to be perfectly  honest with you, that’s the truth. Things will continue to be rocky as  long as this attack continues. They may get worse, they may get  better. That should not be read as “we don’t care about fixing it” or  ”we’re not going to fix it until everything blows over” but instead as  ”we can’t promise when things will be back to normal, but in the  meantime we are working on fixing is ASAP.”

He added that the Twitter operations team will be working around the clock this weekend to resolve the issue.

The message was generally well-received by the developer community, which thanked Twitter for the update. There was some backlash but most said Twitter cannot be held accountable for what happened and they voiced their support.
