Fires rage on outside Athens, Greece

Widespread fires have engulfed areas within miles of Greek capital Athens, forcing several thousand residents of Athens’ northern suburbs to evacuate, BBC reports.

Local officials have declared an environmental disaster and note that they face a “great ordeal” because even with firefighters, soldiers, helicopters, and planes, the fires are too numerous and widespread to contain, adds BBC.

Locals have been using the hashtag #grfires to provide updates, TwitPics, and context as the flames burn on in the area.
