Japanese space freighter berths to International Space Station

Per BBC News, an unmanned Japanese space freighter or H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV), was berthed to the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday morning.

Launched from the Tanegashima base in south Japan last week, the HTV delivers 4.5 tons of supplies, including food and laptops to the astronauts stationed inside the ISS, BBC reports. Once the supplies are removed the HTV, the astronauts will fill it with waste and detach it from the ISS where it will eventually burn-up safely over the Pacific Ocean.

According to the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) this is the first flight of the HTV to be designed, developed and built in Japan.

Many Twitterers in Japan have taken the berthing positively; one even thinking that Japan’s space program is moving up in comparison to other countries:

May have changed the position of Japan’s space development in the world. After a while the space shuttle is retired to become an ISS HTV is the only way to transport large cargo. Defense system also will affect to some degree.)
