President Barack Obama announced Thursday that the United States is abandoning plans for a missile defense shield plan in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Instead, Obama said the U.S. will be implementing a new system that will “provide stronger, smarter and swifter defenses of American forces and America’s allies,” Fox News reports.

Much of the initial reaction from Eastern Europe was not in favor of the decision.
