Villepin, Sarkozy trial elicits strong responses in France

Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin began trial this week with French President Nicolas Sarkozy as a target.

Villepin and four others are defendents in a case involving slander as they claimed that Sarkozy hid bribe money in a Luxembourg bank.

The claims surfaced in 2004  and Villepin’s failure to mention this to legal authority puts him in the wrong, especially after the allegations proved to be false. The New York Times reported Sunday with a detailed account of how the issue first surfaced.

Twitterers in France have been busy both quoting Villepin’s words in the courtroom and offering their own thoughts on the case and their own President:

If found guilty of complicity in this fake list, Villepin could face up to five years in prison, as well as a fine of what would translate to $550,000 U.S. dollars.
