Google Toolbar launches Sidewiki, looks familiar to users

Google has launched a new feature on Google Toolbar called Sidewiki.  Sidewiki is a way for users to post and read comments on any Web site.  Users can comment on either the entire site or just a specific part.  This feature is available only for Google Toolbar users and can be used with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

The intent of Sidewiki is for users to be able to learn from other users’ helpful comments.  Google has created an algorithm to weed out spam and other useless comments.  The program will place the most helpful comments at the top of this list.  The quality of a comment will be ranked by user feedback and previous entries made by the user.

Sidewiki entries can be shared through Facebook, Blogger, Twitter, and Google profiles.

Many Twitter users are seeing a similarity between Sidewiki and previous commenting applications.

jgillick (San Jose, Calif.) How is Google Sidewiki any different than any of the other website commenting/discussion toolbars that came before it?
  2. Johnathan Thompson
JohnathanJThomp (Los Angeles, Calif.) Google Sidewiki is basically just a service Blogged.com has been offering for a while now.
  3. Steve Jang
stevejang (San Francisco, Calif.) google sidewiki feels like del.icio.us w/ a comment viewing sidebar. YHOO could’ve launched this w/ more sites fully user-commented. sigh.
  4. Kevin Matheny
kevinmatheny (Minneapolis, Minn.) Trying out Google Sidewiki. Interesting – reminds me of Third Voice.
  5. Jeremy Brueck
brueckj23 (Undisclosed) Thinking that Google Sidewiki sounds an awful lot like Diigo, doesn’t it?
