Special education teacher slain in classroom, 16-year-old in custody

Todd Henry, a special education teacher at John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas, died this past week after being fatally stabbed by a 16-year-old student.

The stabbing occurred early Wednesday morning when a student, whose name cannot be released due to privacy laws, attacked Henry in a classroom with a sharp object in the presence of  a teachers aide and two other students, Associated Press reports.

No motive has been offered for the crime. In a statement issued by Superintendent Randy Reid, he confirms, “there was nothing in the classroom that incited this situation…it was a random act,” according to AOL News.

Tweeters who knew Todd Henry and others affiliated with John Tyler High School are deeply troubled by the loss of a dedicated educator, who by all accounts loved his job and found happiness working with special needs students.

Henry, a former prison therapist and self taught musician, worked with students who were emotionally or behaviorally challenged, and had been injured in student altercations before, according to AOL News.
