AT&T announced Tuesday that it has taken the “steps necessary” to offer iPhone users Voice Over Internet Protocol to its 3G network so that features like Skype may be used.

9to5mac.com had reactions from an Apple spokeswoman and Skype President Josh Silverman. Both parties said they are pleased with the decision. Skype was added as an application to the iPhone a year ago but can only run on the phone with Wi-Fi access.

Some Twitterers were skeptical about the move and why Google Voice was stopped short of joining the service:

The Washington Post reported Monday that Vonage would be offering voice service on the iPhone and RIM’s Blackberry. One major benefit of VOIP would be the significantly cheaper international calls.
