Per BBC News, The Czech Republic Prime Minister Jan Fischer announced Wednesday that he expects to sign the Lisbon Treaty sometime this year. The Czech Republic and Poland are the only two members of the European Union yet to sign approval of the Treaty.

The major changes that the Lisbon Treaty is said to affect in the European Union are more qualified majority voting in the Council of Ministers, and the increased involvement of the European Parliment in the legislative process through extended codecision with the Council of Ministers.

With Ireland’s approval last week to ratify the treaty and the assurance from Poland in the near future, the Czech Republic is the only member that had Lisbon Treaty supporters worried.

Fischer said “everything is in place” for ratification of the treaty.
