The United State’s celebration of Veteran’s Day dates back to after World War I. First designated a holiday by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, current President Barack Obama honored the day by speaking at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. today.Twitter users were attending parades around the country, and also posting pictures of their own favorite soldiers.

Google Wave opens up to a larger – but still limited – audience

Google has finally opened its door a little wider to allow Gmail users to request an invitation to the revolutionary new e-mail system. Previously, the system was being tested out by a hand-picked group of experts and original g-mail users.

The Wave is a blend of traditional e-mail, instant messaging, file sharing and more, according to CNET technology news. Users can request an invite here or get more information about the new e-mail system on Google’s Wave site.

Twitter users are excited to be a part of the ‘wave,’ but are still in the early stages of figuring out how best to utilize it:

Greenscape Capitol Group to enter Canadian stock exchange

Costa Rica sets goal to be carbon neutral by 2021

Costa Rican officials announced this week that the country plans to be carbon neutral by the year 2021, making it the first country in the world to reach carbon neutrality. Maldives is the only other developing country to have set a similar goal.

According to an interview with Costa Rican president Oscar Arias, Time announced that 95 percent of Costa Rica’s energy already comes from renewable sources that do not pollute the environment.

‘Hopenhagen’ campaign spreads via Twitter

In an attempt to bring every citizen of the world into the climate change debate that will happen in Copenhagen on December 7 of this year, the International Advertising Association has launched ‘Hopenhagen.’

Although the concept was developed by Ogilvy and Mather as far back as June, it is just picking up steam on Twitter as the day of the convention draws nearer. Citizens can sign the Hopenhagen petition and share what gives them hope.

PowerShift youth mobilize for climate change action in front of Parliament

PowerShift 2009 — ‘a group of young voters demanding bold action on climate and energy in 2009,’ according to their Web site — took over the park in front of London’s Parliament when a flash mob began a choreographed dance to promote environmental action. The U.K.’s Guardian has the video.

Greenpeace volunteers also participated, watching from the roof of the Parliament. A participant posted this TwitPic:

Twitter freeze causes delays for frantic users

Twitter experienced technical difficulties Thursday morning: feeds were delayed up to three hours and clicking on links often brought up error messages.

One account, Twitter Tips, was quick to help users by posting some advice early on:

The link provided by Twitter Tips leads to Pipes, a program through Yahoo that allows Twitter users to still see the feeds coming in from anyone they follow by simply typing in their user name–basically, a temporary alternative for the regular Twitter called a ‘Twitter Dynamic Timeline.’ The Huffington Post quickly reported on how to check Twitter statuses in the freeze.

UPS offers new option to ship green

UPS has announced an option for customers to offset the carbon dioxide emissions that are created through the shipping of their packages across the U.S.

While there is a fee for this option, it is only five cents for regular shipping or 20 cents for overnight. UPS also plans to match the cost of fees up to $1 million to further fund climate change research and offset the CO2 emissions. More information about UPS’ plan can be found here.

Apple’s strong position on climate change forces it to leave U.S. Chamber of Commerce

This week, Apple joined the ranks of Nike and Exelon when it dropped out of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce due to the Chamber’s opposition of regulating greenhouse gas emissions.

Apple’s resignation from the Chamber, the world’s largest business federation which represents more than three million businesses, is effective immediately, according to the New York Times.

Google Wave sends out invites, sparks spam invites on Twitter

Google has begun distributing 100,000 invites to its newest product, Google Wave, which attempts to redesign the way e-mail works. But that’s also led to a widespread issue on Twitter.

The real invite will not come through Twitter, but was sent out by Google on Wednesday to 100,000 program developers, original Google users and select businesses, according to Google’s blog. Other people can be nominated to get an invitation. The invitation to take part in a trial of Google’s latest, and probably biggest, project.
