FBI eyes DMV photos in search for fugitives

The FBI has unleashed its newest crime fighting tool which could leave fugitives with fewer places to hide. Starting in North Carolina, the FBI will begin using facial recognition software on millions of motorists to compare license photos with pictures of wanted convicts, reports the Associated Press.

While the technology is not entirely fool proof, one fugitive was caught earlier this year after police compared his photo to over 30 million stored in the motor vehicle agency in North Carolina, according to the AP. Within seconds, a match came up and the double murder suspect was apprehended.

Although the FBI hopes to eventually increase the use of facial recognition software nationwide, many people are concerned that their constitutional rights are being violated. The AP reports that privacy advocates are protesting that the technology allows authorities to track people who have done nothing wrong, putting them up in a “virtual line up.”

This seems to be a popular sentiment from Twitter users around the United States who worry about the ever-broadening reach of big brother.

UConn mourns loss of star athlete, fatally stabbed after homecoming win

The University of Connecticut community is mourning the loss of star cornerback Jasper Howard. The 20-year-old expectant father and UConn Junior was stabbed to death on campus Sunday, hours after winning the homecoming game, according to the Associated Press.

Howard was fatally stabbed outside of a campus ‘Welcome Back’ party, after a fight broke out between two groups including students and non-students. Two of Howard’s teammates witnessed the attack, and another is reported by the Hartford Courant to have also been stabbed.

A suspect by the name of Johnny Hood, 21, is being held in connection with the case, after lying to police at the scene and giving them a fake name. He has not been charged with the stabbing but police believe he was involved in the altercation.

Twitters express their condolences for the football star’s family and commiserate over the tragedy of Howard’s untimely death.

Brazilian crime show host reportedly ordered murders to boost ratings

Popular Brazilian crime show host and former lawmaker, Wallace Souza, has been arrested after a four-day manhunt in the largely lawless jungle state of Amazonas, according to the Associated Press.

Souza, a reported gang leader and popular state Deputy, was arrested on suspicion that he commissioned the assassination of at least five drug-trafficking rivals, and used the resulting murder cases to boost ratings for his show “Canal Livre” in which he condemns crime and corruption.

The BBC confirms that the media personality came under suspicion after Souza’s camera crew reportedly arrived at one murder scene before police.

As a congressman, Souza had been protected by Parliamentary immunity despite the serious charges of murder, and drug trafficking laid against him on July 30. After a state legislative committee ousted him from his post last week, new warrants were issued for his arrest and Souza, now behind bars, has continued to plead his innocence.

Suburban Mom shot while chatting on webcam

Meleanie Hain, a 31-year-old Pennsylvania soccer mom, was shot to death by her husband on Wednesday evening, while chatting with a friend via webcam, according to CNN. Police are calling the tragedy a murder-suicide. According to Lebanon Police Chief Daniel Wright, Scott Hain, 33, was found in an upstairs bedroom with a self-inflicted 12-gauge shotgun wound to the head.

The friend who was chatting with Meleanie at the time of her murder is not being named, and apparently did not actually see her being shot, but heard a scream, shots ring out and Meleanie’s husband shooting at the area where she had been sitting, per Associated Press.

The web video was not recorded and that leaves police with little with which to make sense of this crime. What they do know is that the Hain’s three children were home at the time and the Hain’s were going through a separation.

Hain made headlines last year after packing a loaded, holstered hand gun to her 5-year-old daughters soccer game, and she soon became affectionately known as the “gun toting soccer mom” and an outspoken gun-rights advocate.

Judge denies defense requests in Drew Peterson case

Drew Peterson, a former Bolingbrook, Illinois police officer and suspect in the murder of his third wife and disappearance of his fourth wife, will not have his impending murder trial moved, according to a ruling by Judge Stephen White.

Peterson requested a change of venue, claiming that because of the massive media coverage of the case, including his own appearances on the Today Show, Nightline, his attempts to participate in a radio dating contest and Fox News, he would have trouble finding an impartial jury in Will County. Peterson’s lawyers also challenged the ’Hearsay Law’, enacted less than a year ago, which provides prosecutors the opportunity to use statements made from Peterson’s third wife, Kathleen Savio, recalling the fear she had for her life and disturbing speculations about what Peterson had in store for her. According to the United Press International, the judge was unmoved by the request and confirmed that hearsay law only codified existing case law.

Recently, Peterson’s step daughter, Lisa Ward, came forward on “Good Morning America” to talk about the physical and mental abuse she suffered at the hands of Peterson during the ten years her mother, Peterson’s second wife, was married to him.

Peterson first came under suspicion after the disappearance of his fourth wife, 23 year old Stacy Peterson, in October of 2007. Since then, the remains of wife No. 3, Kathleen Savio, thought to have drowned in their bathtub in 2004, were exhumed and a corner confirmed that the death, which occured after a nasty divorce from Peterson, was actually a homicide. He is currently charged with the murder of Kathleen Savio.

Convicted child killer dies of natural causes while awaiting execution

Convicted sex offender, John Evander Couey, found guilty of the 2005 kidnapping, and sexual assault of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, has died of cancer, reports AOL News.

Couey, who was awaiting execution on Florida’s death row, had taken ill quite some time ago, according to Florida’s Department of Correction spokesperson, Gretl Plessinger.

The dissapearance of Jessica in 2005 sparked a massive search that later ended when her body was found buried in Couey’s yard, still holding onto her favorite stuffed animal. Investigators believe that she was buried alive. The case was covered heavily by the media and sparked outrage across the country.

Tweeters seemed largely angered by Couey’s natural death, and many expressed their discontent that the imposed death penalty would not be carried out.

Couey, who had been convicted of a sex offense prior to the slaying, was deemed to have an IQ slightly above the level considered mentally disabled. This defense was to be argued before the Florida supreme Court next month at his automatic appeal according to the Associated Press.

The brutal slaying had led to many states passing laws named for Jessica, which imposed harsher restrictions on sex offenders.

Special education teacher slain in classroom, 16-year-old in custody

Todd Henry, a special education teacher at John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas, died this past week after being fatally stabbed by a 16-year-old student.

The stabbing occurred early Wednesday morning when a student, whose name cannot be released due to privacy laws, attacked Henry in a classroom with a sharp object in the presence of a teachers aide and two other students, Associated Press reports.

No motive has been offered for the crime. In a statement issued by Superintendent Randy Reid, he confirms, “there was nothing in the classroom that incited this situation…it was a random act,” according to AOL News.

Tweeters who knew Todd Henry and others affiliated with John Tyler High School are deeply troubled by the loss of a dedicated educator, who by all accounts loved his job and found happiness working with special needs students.

UK mom convicted, sentenced for brutal murder of her two teen daughters

Rekha Kumari-Baker, a 41 year old UK waitress, was found guilty earlier this week, of the savage 2007 murders of her two teenage daughters.

The victims, Davina, 13, and Jasmine, 16, were asleep when their mother creeped into their bedrooms in the early morning hours of June 13, 2007 and launched a “frenzied” knife attack, according to the UK Sun.

Tweeters are horrified and saddened at the loss of two young girls struck down in the prime of their lives, and at the same time filled with disbelief that their own mother could be responsible.

Prosecutors painted a startling psychological portrait of Kumari-Baker with the help of key testimony from psychiatrists: a woman willing to do the unthinkable to “wreak havok” on her ex-husband David Baker, with whom she was undergoing a bitter custody battle.

The Criminal Report Daily adds that Kumari-Baker’s defense did not attempt to deny that she was responsible for the murders at any point during the two-week trial, but instead claimed that she suffered from a “mental abnormality” which diminshed her responsibility.

A handwritten note was left at the scene, in which the mother of two wrote: “I don’t want them to get hurt as I did.”

After deliberating for only 35 minutes, a jury found Kumari-Baker guilty on two counts of murder and she was subsequently sentenced to two life sentences, of which she must serve a minimum of 33 years.

Florida man detained in connection with horrific murders of wife and young children

Florida man Mesac Damas was arrested and taken in for questioning yesterday in connection with the murder of his wife and five children. According to the Associated Press, Damas was found in Port-au-Prince, Haiti after a massive police manhunt was launched Sunday.

The bodies were found Saturday morning by police officers who describe the scene as “the worst of the worst,” per the New York Times.

Naples residents and Tweeters are shocked by this senseless crime.

Damas had flown to Haiti on Friday morning, a day before the bodies were discovered. In a potentially damning revelation to a Naples News reporter yesterday, Damas, while in custody at a Haiti police station, revealed that he planned to surrender and he had come to Haiti to “say goodbye to my family”.

The suspected murderer has a lengthy history of domestic abuse against his wife and young children, ranging from ages 9 to 11 months, FOX News reports.

Hunt for insane killer concludes with arrest in Washington State

On Sunday, Police captured and arrested 47-year-old criminally insane killer escapee Phillip Arnold Paul after a four day manhunt, the Seattle Times reports. Paul had vanished during a Spokane County fair outing.

The manhunt intensified after residents and officials around Washington State expressed their outrage at the fact that Paul was allowed to participate in such an outing. The state Department of Social and Health services had ordered an immediate end to such trips and an investigation was launched into the Spoken County fair field trip, according to media reports.

Spokane Twitter users breathed a collective sigh of relief upon hearing of his arrest.

Police used many methods to search including helicopter until finding him and believe Paul, a diagnosed schizophrenic, may have been headed to see his parents and siblings in the Sunnyside Area, according to Spokane County officials.

Paul has repeatedly tried to escape from Eastern State mental hospital since he pleaded guilty by reason of insanity for the 1987 murder of an elderly woman in his hometown of Sunnyside, Wash., reports the Associated Press.
