TwitPics: Sheep fire in Wrightwood, California

According to the Examiner, 4,000 to 6,000 residents were evacuated from areas in Wrightwood, California due to a 7,500-acre Sheep fire. The fire destroyed three homes in remote areas.

Firefighters were able to contain 20 percent of the fire after the winds slowed down late Sunday. Calmer winds are expected in the upcoming days which will help firefighters keep the fire from reaching Wrightwood.

TwitPics: Flooding in the Philippines after torrential rains

Torrential rains from tropical storm Ketsana has caused the worst flooding in decades in the Philippine capital of Manila and nearby provinces, reports BBC News.

BBC News also reports that 72 people are feared dead and more than 250,000 have been driven from their homes.

The states of Queensland and New South Wales are being engulfed by an unusual dust storm, consisting of high winds and an eerie orange hue to the skies from Brisbane to Sydney. Drought conditions across the region intensified the storm, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

UN Climate Change Summit: China taking lead?

China’s President Hu Jintao said at the United Nations Summit today in New York that China would work towards curbing its emissions, CNN reports. As the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, Jintao says the Chinese are committed to reduce its emissions by a “notable margin” in the upcoming years.

AP reported that U.S. President Barack Obama also talked at the summit earlier. “We understand the gravity of the climate threat. We are determined to act,” Obama said. “And we will meet our responsibility to future generations.”

Jintao did not present any specific proposals of how to accomplish reducing their carbon footprint. Some tweets criticized his and Obama’s announcements:

The hope that the two nations that are credited with contributing the most to the global climate change, China and the U.S., might encourage them to step up their programs to curb their emissions. Atlanta floods prove fatal for some, cause school and road closings

The storms in the Southeast United States have hit Atlanta particularly hard with four confirmed dead and many more missing. The Atlanta Journal Constitution has reported that the Governor declared a state of emergency in 17 counties.

Plenty of damage has already been done as there were a reported 11,000 people without power as of this afternoon and many schools in the metro Atlanta area will be closed tomorrow.

Twitterers have been reacting to the storms with prayers and stories of their own from being caught in the floods, while some seem to be unaware of the severity of the flooding:

The storms have been going strong for three days and is expected to continue at least well into Thursday, with more chances of rain predicted through Sunday. Many Twitter users are using the hashtags #ATLflood and #ATLfloods for this event.

East Asia recovering from earthquakes, typhoons

Per Xinhua, typhoon-related heavy rains resulted in mudslides and other issues, as 13 people died in Japan. More than 600 villagers were reportedly buried in a mudslide in Taiwain, adds the New York Times.

A pair of earthquakes also devastated Japan, while a tsunami alert failed to materialize, according to Worldfocus.

How bad were the storms? Damage varied by location, but a number of Twitterers across East Asia shared their aftermath thoughts.

BVJ stage collapses after violent storm in Western Canada

A violent storm caused a concert stage to collapse Saturday evening at the Big Valley Jamboree, a music festival just outside of Edmonton in Camrose, Alberta, reports The Edmonton Journal. One person has died and at least 60 are reported to be injured as a result of the incident, per iNews 880.
