Heath Ledger’s Last Film Debuts at Cannes

The Cannes Film Festival officially wrapped up with Austria’s The White Ribbon receiving the Palme d’Or award but everyone’s talking about something else: “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”–the film Heath Ledger was making before his tragic death.

The film, directed by Terry Gilliam, was screened for the first time as part of the festival. According to E! Online, Ledger “plays a snake-oil salesman type who is found hanging from a London bridge by two members of a traveling theater troupe. The group introduces Ledger to a magic portal that allows him to travel to different fantastical worlds that exist within people’s imaginations.”

Because Ledger died before the film’s completion, the director asked Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell to fulfill Ledger’s rolle, as he makes his way through the portal worlds.

“The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus” does not yet have a U.S. release date, but is scheduled to open in European theaters this fall.
