Twitterverse Weighs In: Why Adam Lost “Idol”

A week after Kris Allen’s surprise win on “American Idol,” news outlets such as The New York Times and Newsweek are speculating on why Adam Lambert, an early favorite, didn’t get the most votes last Tuesday.

Newsweek questioned whether the judges misstepped by praising Lambert early and often, perhaps leading his fans to feel as if he was “safe.” They also criticized the poorly-received song “No Boundaries,” penned by judge Kara DioGuardi, for disadvantaging Adam. Many Twitter users agree that the judges may have inadvertently hurt Lambert’s chances:

  1. Heather Morrow
HMMorrow I think the judges, media, & everyone tryin to shove Adam Lambert down our throats backfired. America LOVES an underdog. Congrats Kris Allen
  2. Sonya Trejo
sonyatj Kara whatsherface sabotaged Adam Lambert with that godawful turd of a song.
  3. Amanda Harvey
ah3504 Adam lambert should have won thanks kara for setting adam up to fail with that horrible song that was wrote for Kris and his voice.
  4. Isadora King
isadoraking Thought Kara DioGuardi’s song was awful! Really didn’t suit Adam Lambert’s voice. Not fair!
  5. DONNA NEWTON
DonnaGranni Adam Lambert was torpedoed by Judges praise.Public didn’t like it.
  6. Nok King
nokking @suebrody1 I like @PaulaAbdul when she was asked whether judges’ praises hurt Adam Lambert ’s chances, “call it as it is” she said :) #Idol

Other in Twitterverse think that Lambert was too edgy for the role of “American Idol.” Rumors have circulated online that he is gay, though he has not yet confirmed or denied it. Newsweek cited the sexuality rumor as well as Allens’ Christian faith as a possible reasons for the “Idol” upset. Lambert fans tweeted their outrage at the ideas:

  1. Arthur Peterson
loquaciousmoi Adam Lambert lost due to the biased, blindingly Christian, and homophobic “Middle America”; will we ever stop backpedaling? Just appalling
  2. Joseph Peterson
planetJoseph I can’t believe Adam Lambert lost. do you think Kris won on merits alone or did he get a Christian vote? He is good, but better than Adam??!
  1. Malen Olalo
malenmd i really feel bad that adam lambert lost to kris allen in american idol. i guess they are not yet ready for a gay idol
  2. Kate Whatmough
KateWhattie How did Adam Lambert not win American Idol??? If he lost the title because he is gay, that just shows how stupid the American public are.
  3. Remy Hadley
lilolemon Adam Lambert’s gay. That’s why he lost to Kris. Duh.
  4. Kayla Oakley
kayla_mariemhmm Still pissed that adam lost american idol. Stupid gay haters ruin everything.

Other “Idol” rumors swirling in the Twittersphere, as well as covered by The New York Times, are suggesting Fox may have manipulated results because they preferred a fresh-faced winner like Allen over glam-rocker Lambert. AT&T has also been called into question for providing free text messaging services events in Kris Allen’s hometown. Twitterers are reacting to these rumors with varying opinions:

  1. Kevin Jones
UncleKevin AT&T had large viewing parties in AR 4 Kris Allen. They provided free AT&T phones 4 texting & calling. Sounds rigged against Adam Lambert!!
  2. brandonlk
brandonlk @JSpikEThinG They never release actual numbers. Bottom line is they want to make money and if Adam was the man they would have rigged it
  3. Arlene Oriel
arleneoriel I wanted Adam to win American Idol!!! But sadly, he lost. I think the voting was rigged. I wouldn’t have minded if Danny won, though.
  4. Melissa Thomas
roxterdesigns Thanks AT&T for cheating us of our TRUE American Idol, Adam Lambert!
Yea, I’m still not over it!!
  5. Kaetsa Freeman
Kaetsa Now I get it – http://bit.ly/i8gWM AT&T cheated in Arkansas. Adam Lambert should have won.

Still, the consensus from the Twitterverse has been that Lambert will have a successful career despite not taking home the title of “American Idol.” Opportunities are already rolling in – rock band Queen’s Brian May has told Rolling Stone they are interested in working with Adam in the future.

Check back later in the week for more reflections on this season of “American Idol.”
