After ten years together, Jon and Kate Gosselin of  TLC’s “Jon and Kate Plus 8″ have filed paperwork to end their marriage. According to PEOPLE.com, “documents to initiate a legal split were filed at the Bucks County Courthouse in Doylestown, Penn., Monday afternoon.”

Much of the Twitterverse was saddened by the news:

PEOPLE reported, “The duo had long maintained a tense relationship, with Jon recently telling PEOPLE he wanted a less high-profile life, while Kate appeared to remain committed to their TV career.” Speculations increased over the status of their marriage after Jon was photographed leaving a bar with another woman in February. Jon denied any allegations of an affair, but has been photographed with the woman on several other occasions. The couple has also been seen taking separate vacations in recent months. Kate has also shared concerns over the state of their marriage with PEOPLE saying separation wouldn’t be out of the question.

The show first aired in 2007 and recently started its fifth season, which premiered with record ratings. The show gives insight into the Gosselin family’s lives as Jon and Kate raise their eight kids: eight-year-old twins Cara Nicole and Madelyn Kate and five-year-old sextuplets Alexis Faith, Hannah Joy, Aaden Jonathan, Collin Thomas, Leah Hope, and Joel Kevin.
