Conflicting Reports of Michael Jackson’s Death Overwhelm Twitter

Following the breaking news that Michael Jackson had been hospitalized for a cardiac arrest, conflicting reports of the pop legend’s condition left Twitterers worried and confused.

CNN.com originally said Jackson was in a coma while the Los Angeles Times confirmed his death.  CNN, both on-air and on its site, referred to the L.A. Times story and other sources, but did not directly confirm the news for nearly two hours after Jackson’s hospitalization.

Twitterers reached out to one another to verify facts but due to overwhelming activity, the site went down a number of times.

Twitter may have got the Michael Jackson death right, but there were rumours about Jeff Goldblum dying on there as well. The traditional media may be more careful, but only because they have more at stake - and when they do break a story, you can be sure it's the final word.
