Oscars Expand Best Pictures Category

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided yesterday to return to its roots by increasing the number of nominees for the best picture award, reports CNN.com.

Since the 1940s, the best picture nominees were made up of five films, but prior to that, the category recognized ten best movies each year.

“After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year,” Sid Ganis said in a press release.  “The final outcome, of course, will be the same — one Best Picture winner – but the race to the finish line will feature 10, not just five, great movies from 2009.”

The announcement comes after 2008’s nominees did not include “The Dark Knight,” which reportedly upset moviegoers.
