Per MTV News, Rihanna tattooed a few of the tattoo artists at East Side Ink in New York earlier this week, perhaps not realizing what she was doing was illegal.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene confirmed to MTV that they are investigated what happened.  According to a statement issued by the health department, “Only licensed tattoo artists can administer tattoos in the city according to the City’s Health Code.  We are sending someone to follow up on this.”

According to the article, TMZ reported that if the department decides to press charges against Rihanna for tattooing without a license, she could face three misdemeanors.  Sources also told TMZ that East Side Ink could be issued fines as well.

MTV News spoke to East Side Ink owner Yadira, who said that the pop star hadn’t visited the parlor with any intention of tattooing her artist, BangBang, as well as two other artists at the shop.  Instead, Rihanna was there with some friends and a bodyguard “just hanging out” when BangBang decided that he wanted Rihanna to give him a tattoo.
