“Harry Potter” Breaks Box Office…And Computers

According to Entertainment Weekly, “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” raked in $22.2 million from its midnight showings early Wednesday morning–the most ever.  At this rate, the film has potential to break five-day records as well.  And, according to Variety, the film earned $100 million worldwide in just 24 hours.

Since millions of people are searching the Internet for info on the latest “Harry Potter” adventure-fantasy film, hackers have developed a virus that could affect would-be downloaders, according to an article from MTV News.  Popular sites such as Digg.com have been targeted, in which cybercriminals have found a way to post headlines that read “Watch ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ online free!”  And as professional-looking images from the film appear on the computer screen as well, Potter fans are convinced the movie is just one click away– but as they keep clicking, a virus is being installed on their computers instead.

The virus is extremely intrusive and searches your computer for credit card or bank information, and even social security numbers.  Michael Greene, VP of Product Strategy at PC Tools, told MTV that hackers will collect your information and “then they’ll turn around and sell that to another group, a ‘carding operation’ they call it, and these guys will buy blank credit cards from a third group; they’ll put them together, print out the credit cards and then sell physical credit cards with your numbers on the street.”

In the article, Greene recommends just paying the 10 bucks to see the movie in a theater.  And if you’ve already been plagued by the virus, get a good antivirus program and clean your computer immediately.

In the Twitterverse, most “Potter” fans are angry about the virus, while others are still trying to find a way to download the movie for free:
