Despite less-than-stellar reviews, writer-director Judd Apatow had the last laugh this weekend as his latest  film, “Funny People,” starring Adam Sandler, captured the number one spot at the box office and brought in $23.4 million, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Unfortunately the victory wasn’t enough to overshadow the fact that it was Sandler’s worst opening since his 2000 flop,  ”Little Nicky,” or that it earned less than Apatow’s last film, “Knocked Up.”

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” came in second with $17.7 million, bringing its grand total to $255.5 million. The guinea pig-starring “G-Force” wiggled its way into third with $17.1 million.  The movie came in first last week.

Twitter reviews were mixed across the board:
