“District 9″ Takes #1 Spot at the Box Office

According to Entertainment Weekly, the sleeper alien action flick “District 9″ proved you don’t need big names to bring in big bucks at the box office.

Directed by newcomer Neill Blomkamp, and produced by Peter Jackson, “District 9″ pulled in $37 million over the weekend, despite a cast of unknowns and a meager budget.

”G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra” landed in second place with $22.5 million while “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, found its way into the top three with $19.2 million.

Twitterers reviewed each film:

ahk057 I saw District 9 last night, and it’s still resonating with me. It’s not only great sci-fi, but is also a commentary on human nature.
  4. Ryan Smith
diskord District-9 was so good that here I am 12 hours later and I still can’t stop thinking about how good it was.
  5. Asvin Srivatsangam
asvinzone District 9 was ok for me. I am not much into alient stuff. I rate Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ better than his latest.
  6. Rick Flashman
RickFlashman District 9 is destined to be a true classic of Sci-Fi cinema. Truly makes us look at who we are and how we treat others.

ZombieTheory G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra – It would’ve been more entertaining if they just lit the $175 million budget on fire. My inner child is dead!
  2. Jason Deabill
incongruousm G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra – Starts stupid, gets moreso. Totally daft & often awful CGI. A hopeless mess, still made me smile.
  3. Phoebe Truong
