Chris Brown’s first television interview since his February altercation with then-girlfriend Rihanna aired tonight on CNN.  The network’s Larry King interviewed Brown, his mother Joyce Hawkins and his attorney Mark Geragos.

Brown accepted a plea deal in June and a month later posted a video on YouTube apologizing for his actions.  He was recently sentenced to five years probation along with 180 hours of “hard labor.”

Among the interview’s highlights:

Brown said he knows “everything comes with consequences” and it was “possibly” hardest time in his life.  At the sentencing, Brown was barred from contacting Rihanna, to which Brown said “not being able to see, talk to [her] is kind of difficult.”  Brown said he is “fearful of rumors” thanks to “immature media.”  “I feel like it’s high school sometimes,” he said. “They spin a lot of stuff out of control.”  Throughout the interview, Brown referred to what happened as an “incident,” often bowed his head and admitted he didn’t know if the leaked picture of a battered Rihanna was real but ” just felt so disappointed in myself.” But when asked by King what happened specifically, Brown answered “I owe it to her not to talk about” it. He later added, “How we dealt with the situation is between me and [Rihanna],” who he repeatedly referred to as a friend.  In regards to the aforementioned YouTube video, Brown admitted “I got a little help with the wording but it came from my heart.”

Hawkins, Brown’s mother, said she was “devastated” when she found out what happened and still finds it “mind-boggling.”  Hawkins, who was in tears at some points, discussed her experience with an abusvive lover, which attorney Geragos said could have influenced Brown’s behavioir.  Gergaos also said Brown “wanted to take responsibility immediately.”

Looking to the future, Brown said he wants “to be a man” and learn how to “control” himself.  In regards to Rihanna, he said “I’m pretty sure we can always be friends.  I don’t know about a relationship…but we ended as friends.”  He admitted he would be “affected” if she started dating someone, and said the only girl he loves right now is “all [his] fans.” Brown said he was focusing on his career right now which he doesn’t believe is “over.” He also said he managed to attend Michael Jackson’s memorial service unnoticed.

Shortly after the program started, “Chris Brown” and “Larry King Live” made it on to Trending Topics. Later, Brown dropped off and “Larry King” and “Rihanna” remained.  Tweeters had plenty to say about the interview:
