Actress-singer Selena Gomez has been appointed as the newest UNICEF Ambassador, reports Reuters. At 17 years old, Gomez is the youngest UNICEF Ambassador ever.

Gomez will work with UNICEF to help reduce the number of preventable deaths of children from 25,000 a day to zero. Her first official field mission is in Ghana, where she will witness the destitute conditions in which many children in the country live, without necessities such as clean water, food, education and healthcare.

“The Wizards of Waverly Place” star tweeted on Friday, Sept. 4 from her iPhone that she had landed in Africa to begin her work:
