Directors Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen are among the hundreds of film industry bigwigs who have signed a petition in support of fellow director Roman Polanski, E!Online reports.

The petition calls for Polanski’s release from jail in Switzerland, and denounces the fact that Polanski was arrested on the way to the Zurich Film Festival where he was to receive a lifetime achievement award.  Polanski’s own lawyers have been working on a petition of their own to get their client out of Swiss jail.

Polanski plead guilty to raping a young girl in 1978, but fled the U.S. before he could be sentenced.  He’s managed to have a successful career without ever returning to the States, or going to a country that could extradite him due to his outstanding warrant.
