Many Twitterers logged on earlier today to find actor Zach Braff was a Trending Topic, after a rumor had circulated that “Scrubs” star committed suicide. Before any other details of his supposed death had emerged, news outlets confirmed the rumor was false.

While the rumor first started on Twitter, and the microblogging site is responsible for it spreading so quickly, Twitter also did its part to control it as well.  A new feature, which gives each Trending Topic a brief note as to why it is, in fact, a trending topic, stated the story was fake.

As Twitterers continue to learn of the rumor and find out the truth, many are criticizing it for being the source of the false story in the first place:
