Letter from the Editor: BT Entertainment Turns 6 Months Old!

I’m going to be a proud mama and gush for a little bit.

Breaking Tweets Entertainment, our little baby, is six months old today!

The site officially launched on April 20, 2009 with a post on Coachella.  At the time, our only blueprint was Breaking Tweets, which was the first site to aggregate tweets and use to them to tell a story.

When Craig Kanalley, BT’s founder, approached me to launch the entertainment site, I knew we’d face a rocky path.  New entertainment Web sites are springing up every day–what would make BT Entertainment special?

The answer is quite simple.  It’s what we do and what we don’t.

We use your tweets to see what you think about pop culture.

We don’t report gossip, steal content or manipulate the truth.

We are still the only site out there whose sole mission is to spread entertainment news through Twitter.  One of the biggest projects we’ve done is live-blogging awards shows, whether it be the Primetime Emmys, the MTV Movie Awards or the Tonys.  Our real-time updates tell you not just who is presenting and winning, but what viewers are tweeting as they watch.  While other sites are slowly beginning to recognize the power of opinion on Twitter, we’re six months ahead of the curve and Breaking Tweets itself is even further along.

Our innovative approach to entertainment news along with our steadfast dedication to basic journalism principles has allowed BT Entertainment to foster a loyal following.

We gained our 1,000th follower on Twitter this week, and published post number 640 (this makes 641!).  We have writers that have been with us since Day 1 and others that have joined along the way–and we’re always looking for more.

As we plan for the future, I know the path ahead is still rocky.  The site is run entirely on a volunteer basis, and we are actively trying to develop a business plan.  While we work to provide the content you’ve come to love and trust, we ask that you consider supporting us in other ways.

But, first and foremost, keep on tweeting.  You are what makes Breaking Tweets possible in the first place.  Thank you to each and every one of you.

Onwards and upwards!
