Although it only cost roughly $10,000 to make, “Paranormal Activity” has made an estimated $22 million in its first weekend in full release, according to EW.com. The unexpected hit has already made $62.5 million in limited release.

“Saw VI” came in second, making $14.8 million and having the worst opening in the history of the franchise. In comparison, “Saw V” made almost double last year, with $30 million. The blood- and gore-filled plot of “Saw VI” contrasts to the suspense and creepiness of “Paranormal.”

Spike Jonze’s “Where the Wild Things Are” pulled in an estimated $14.4 million, and could in fact upstage “Saw IV” when the final numbers come in. The movie has made $53.9 million since its release.

Overall, box office numbers were down about 10 percent from last year, when “High School Musical 3″ helped to pull in big  dollars.
