“A Christmas Carol” Tops Box Office, “This Is It” Drops

Holiday cheer arrived especially early this year with the weekend release of the animated “A Christmas Carol.”  The film led the box office with $175 million, according to EW.com.  Jim Carrey plays multiple roles in the film adaption of the Charles Dickens’ story.

“This Is It,” the Michael Jackson concert documentary, was in second place with $14 million, dropping 40 percent in its second weekend. The new comedy “The Men Who Stare at Goats,” starring George Clooney, came in third with $13.3 million.

The Oprah-endorsed and Sundance-winning film “Precious” broke the record for per-screen average for a movie opening in more than 10 theaters. The drama starring Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey and Gabourey Sidibe grossed $1.8 million on only 18 screens.
