MTV’s “Jersey Shore” Under Scrutiny From Interest Group, Advertisers

MTV’s newest reality show, “Jersey Shore,” has received criticisms from an Italian-American interest group, which claims the show promotes negative stereotypes about Italian-Americans, EW.com reports. The organization, UNICO National, has urged MTV to cancel the program, which premiered December 3.

MTV said it stands by its decision to keep “Jersey Shore” on the air, citing the fact that the show’s purpose is to give insight into a particular subgroup of teen culture, more specifically teenagers living in a rented summer home on a New Jersey waterfront.

Two of MTV’s advertisers, Domino’s and American Family Insurance, have discontinued their advertisements during the reality program.

The Twitterverse is conflicted over the controversial reality show; some tweeps enjoy watching while others don’t want to watch but are tempted to anyway, and several do in fact have negative reviews of the show:

    I think the show just gives Jersey a bad name. Most of the people on the show aren't even from Jersey. I've been living in Jersey all my life and had no idea what a "guiddo" was until in went to college. This show is just stupid, even for MTV.
