Christmas Day Sales Break Box Office Records

Christmas Day brought the highest single-day sales at the box office in Hollywood’s history, reports Entertainment Weekly.

The overall weekend earnings topped $278 million, with the sci-fi film “Avatar” holding the number one spot with a $75 million intake on its second weekend.

Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” also set records with a $65.4 million debut, making it the highest-ever Christmas weekend opening. The weekend’s number three spot went to the family-oriented ”Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.”

Twitter was filled with talk of movies, with “Avatar” continuing to be a Trending Topic:

TheMadVender Avatar was pretty great. 3D glasses gave me a bit of trouble, and seeing Papyrus in 3D is even worse than 2D, but overall, good movie.
