People’s Choice Awards Announced
Movie, music and television stars gathered Wednesday evening in the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles for the 2010 People’s Choice Awards, hosted by Queen Latifah. Fans had the opportunity to vote for their favorites in all categories, with the results being the sole basis for who received awards.
Host Queen Latifah opened the show, which aired on CBS, by singing a medley filled with pop culture references and then introduced the first award. Tweeps offered their opinions on Queen Latifah’s hosting skills throughout the show:
Ellen DeGeneres accepted the first award of the evening, Favorite Talk Show Host, beating out Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks, Regis & Kelly, and Chelsea Handler. Tweeps applauded her acceptance speech:
“The Proposal” won Favorite Comedy Movie, edging out “The Hangover,” “17 Again,” “He’s Just Not That Into You” and “Bride Wars.” While some tweeps found “The Proposal” to be funny, others felt that “The Hangover” should have won the award:
Mariah Carey took home the Favorite R&B Artist award. Other nominees included Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, and Usher. Soon after her win, Mariah Carey became a Trending Topic on Twitter, with tweeps having mixed reactions to her win:
Favorite TV Comedy Actor went to Steve Carell of “The Office.” The Twitterverse responded well to Carell’s win and acceptance speech:
Alyson Hannigan, of “How I Met Your Mother,” won Favorite TV Comedy Actress. Tweeps had many positive words to say about Hannigan’s win:
Chevy Chase and Jenna Elfman presented the Favorite TV Comedy award to “The Big Bang Theory.” Tweeps were pleasantly surprised to see this offbeat comedy pick up the award:

In the second musical act of the night, Mary J. Blige performed her hit single, “I Am.”
Carrie Underwood nabbed the Favorite Country Artist award, beating Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, and Rascal Flatts. Tweeps shared their opinions on Underwood’s win while others commented on who they believed should have won the award:
Bullock win over Kristin Stewart and carrie underwood over Taylor swift!?
Hugh Laurie of “House” won Favorite TV Drama Actor. Laurie dedicated his win to his show’s cast and crew, as “House” also won Favorite TV Drama.
George Lopez presented the Favorite Movie Actress award to pal Sandra Bullock, whose movie “The Proposal” won earlier in the evening–though the nomination reel for this award focused on her role in “The Blind Side.” Bullock won over Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Anne Hathaway and “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart. Bullock was well received in the Twittersphere for both her win and her speech:
Hugh Jackman captured the Favorite Action Star award for his work in “Wolverine.”
“Inglourious Basterds” picked up Favorite Independent Movie. The Twitterverse shared their excitement over this movie’s win but disappointment in who accepted it:
Taylor Lautner won Favorite Breakout Movie Actor over Chris Pine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sam Worthington, and Zachary Quinto. Tweeps responded to enthusiastically to the “Twilight” star’s win. “Twilight” picked up several other awards off the air.
Keith Urban won Favorite Male Artist, beating Eminem, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, and Tim McGraw:
Cobra Starship performed “Good Girls Go Bad” with Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls. Several tweeps noted that the duet normally features “Gossip Girl” star Leighton Meester.
Jessica Alba, of the upcoming film “Valentine’s Day,” presented the Favorite Web Celeb award to her co-star Ashton Kutcher, who accepted his award by announcing that he was filming the whole thing with a camera phone and it was simultaneously being broadcast on the web:
“The Vampire Diaries” won Favorite New TV Drama but none of the show’s cast or crew were there to accept the award.
“Glee” captured Favorite New TV Comedy, beating “Accidentally On Purpose,” “The Cleveland Show,” “Cougar Town,” and “Modern Family.” Following the cast’s acceptance speech, pizza was delivered to the audience.
LL Cool J presented Favorite Female Artist to winner Taylor Swift. Beyonce, Britney Spears, Carrie Underwood, and Pink were among the nominees in this category.
Johnny Depp claimed the final award of the evening, Favorite Movie Actor, winning over Robert Pattinson, Hugh Jackman, Brad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds. Presenter Sasha Baron Cohen announced that Depp had received more cumulative votes than anyone else throughout the last ten years, making him People’s Choice Actor of the Decade.
Tweeps had conflicting reviews of the awards show overall. Some found the awards show to be boring while others found it to be an exciting preview of what the awards show season has in store:
