George Clooney to Host Telethon for Haiti

In an effort to bring much needed relief to Haiti earthquake victims, actor George Clooney will host a telethon on January 22 that will simulcast on various networks, according to Entertainment Weekly. Though MTV was the original network to sign on, promising the telethon would run on all MTV outlets, other broadcast and cable networks have since joined. (For a full list, click here)

Haiti was struck with tragedy January 12, when a 7.0-magnitude earthquake ransacked the island. Forty-thousand people have died, according to reports, though authorities estimate 100,000 more bodies will be found.

The “Up in the Air” actor will lead the telethon’s broadcast in Los Angeles while Haitian-born Wyclef Jean has signed on to host from New York City and CNN’s Anderson Cooper will host from Haiti. More stars, as well as networks, are expected to be announced in the days ahead.

Since the earthquake first happened, Twitter has been an important communication tool, with both people in Haiti and throughout the world using it to spread information. Celebrities have used the service to rally donations, and now news of the telethon is also being passed along:

  • These celebrities need to know the world doesn't not revolve around them. A telethon a week after? These people need help NOW. This telethon proves nothing more than self importance for George Clooney and the rest involved. Screw a telethon, put your money where your mouth is, charter your private jet and make a real difference. Don't sit behind a desk or behind a mic..donate more of your money celebs! Surely Paris Hilton can put off another pink Ferrari or whatever she bought. Giving loose change to In and Out Burger a good celeb does not you make. Step up a little better. I know I'm preachy about it but I can only give so much. I'm a mother of 2 who after 3 months of both husband and I being unemployed both just got jobs. We donated what we could and are involved in several organizations for donating food, supplies and clothing. I was military and right there fir the Katrina victims. Step up Hollywood! Step up!
