Wyclef Jean is denying allegations he profited from his charity Yéle Haiti, which has received increased attention following the earthquake in Haiti earlier this month. PEOPLE.com reports the musician gave a tearful statement to reporters saying, “Did we make mistakes? Yes. Did I ever use any of Yéle’s money for personal benefits? Absolutely not. Yéle’s books are open and transparent, and we have been a clean bill of health by an external auditor every year since we started.”

Last week it was reported “Jean had used $410,000 from the foundation to pay for rent, production services, and Jean’s appearance at a benefit concert.” Celebrities may only accept funds from their organizations if they are being paid for services they provided.

Many have used to Twitter to drum up donations for Jean’s charity and now the Twitterverse is buzzing over the controversy:
