**Updated** “Avatar” Becomes Second-Highest Grossing Movie Of All Time

Updated 6:26 p.m.: According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Avatar” is now the highest grossing film worldwide. The sci-fi flick broke the “Titanic” record earlier today. It has not yet beaten the domestic record, also held by “Titanic.”

Originally published earlier today: “Avatar” made $36 million this weekend, for a $552.8 million domestic total and the top spot at the box office, according to EW.com.

The James Cameron-directed film has now surpassed “The Dark Knight” to become the second-highest grossing movie of all time both domestically and worldwide. Cameron’s film “Titanic” holds the top spot in both categories but “Avatar” is expected to surpass its totals as well.

The new film “Legion” was second place at the box office, with an opening weekend earning of $18.2 million.   “The Book of Eli,” in its second week of release, dropped 48 percent for a $17 million third-place finish.

The Dwayne Johnson comedy “The Tooth Fairy,” another new flick, debuted fourth with $14.5 million.

FreeBitch_ Finished the Book of Eli, was better than I expected. A bit hokey with the whole Bible thing, but nicely filmed & acted. 7/10

zergbane Avatar overtook The Dark Knight. I understand why it happened, & I enjoyed Avatar, but still <sigh>, I’m a comicbook guy, first & foremost.
  3. Lynsi Lewis
LynsiCarpeDiem Forgot to tell everyone NEVER to see The Book of Eli. Probably the biggest waste of my 2 hours. Should have seen Legion instead.
  4. Carolina Navas
TitaniaJo Legion was fantastic!!!!! Paul Bettany is not just a great actor but also very handsome too! What a voice! Love the accent!
  5. Mastermind
MastermindLive “The Tooth Fairy” was OK…some parts funnier than others…Not the “Rock’s” best movie but still enjoyable…

tonigirl91 Just watched Avatar. Amazing movie, truly represents the cruelty of humans and their lust for money, but I still think Titanic is better.

spiritualtramp So I think I’m getting tired of hearing “Avatar’s awesome, in spite of a weak story.” Is that what we want? Pretty lights and 0 substance?
  8. With Daggers Drawn
WDaggersDrawn Avatar in IMAX 3D is one of the greatest movies of our time. EPIC!

joesweet Good morning! Finally got a chance to check out Avatar over the weekend. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I strongly suggest seeing it at the Theaters.

365Days365Movie 31. Legion – 4/10…Poorly developed characters, silly plot with many holes, and uninteresting action scenes made this movie pretty terrible

  • I wish Dwayne Johnson would pick better family movies to make.
