Tyra Banks Announces Plus-Sized Modeling Contest

PEOPLE.com reports Tyra Banks is organizing a modeling contest for plus-sized teens. Girls aged 13-19 and between 5′ 9″ and 6′ 1″ in height and sizes 12-20 are eligible to participate in the contest, called “Tyra’s Fiercely Real Teen Model Search.”

Banks, a former model and current host of “America’s Next Top Model,” says she wants to change the “negative connotation” associated with plus-sized women and help the country realize that the average woman is “healthy, fit and beautiful.”

The winner will receive a one-year contract with Wilhelmina, be featured on a magazine cover and be awarded other prizes. Visit tyrashow.warnerbros.com to learn how to enter.

Many Twitter users were shocked to discover that they might be considered “plus-sized” by modeling definitions:

  1. Nika Bowens

tiftweets Just read the “plus-sized” model category begins at…size 6. So at 5′5 and < 120lbs., that means I’m 1 size from plus? Oh, puh-lease.
  7. Ling Shaw
    LingLingS615 i find it baffling reg models hav 2 b size <6 & plus size models have 2 b size 12-20 & all have 2 b > 5′9″. so normal sized ppl can’t model?

Last month Banks announced her eponymous talk show would end in spring 2010 so she could turn her attention to other projects.
