CBS Faces Super Bowl Ad Controversy

Pro-choice and feminist groups are protesting CBS for their plans to air a 30-second commercial allegedly promoting pro-life views during next month’s Super Bowl, EW.com reports.

The ad, which was paid for by the Christian organization Focus on the Family, reportedly features Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow and his mother discussing how she ignored doctors’ advice to have an abortion.

Groups such as the Women’s Media Center are arguing the Super Bowl, which is the most-watched television program of the year, is not the time or the place to voice political and/or religious views. In response, Focus on the Family said they expected people to disagree with the ad but noted people are commenting without having seen the it, adding there’s “nothing political or controversial about it.”

CBS said they still plan to air the commercial despite the controversy. In a statement, the network wrote, “We have for some time moderated our approach to advocacy submissions after it became apparent that our stance did not reflect public sentiment or industry norms on the issue. In fact, most media outlets have accepted advocacy ads for some time. At CBS, our standards and practices process continues to adhere to a process that ensures all ads — on all sides of an issue — are appropriate for air. We will continue to consider responsibly produced ads from all groups for the few remaining spots in Super Bowl XLIV.”

Some tweeps said the issue is a matter of free speech while others said they wanted personal choices off the gridiron:
