ABC executives recently contacted “Ugly Betty” producers to share some news and it wasn’t pretty: the show’s current season will be its last, according to a report from EW.com.

ABC has also reduced the number of episodes in its fourth and last season from 22 to 20. In a joint statement by the network and the show’s producer, fans were assured the show would still be given a “proper farewell.”

Although the news might come as a shock to some, ABC announced last May they were moving the show to Fridays, which many argued at the time was a sign of impending doom, as television viewers and critics alike believe Friday night to be a death row of sorts for TV shows. Then, in October, the season premiere was delayed by a few weeks, causing some to speculate whether the network had any faith left in the show at all.

The one-time hit series saw a decline in ratings over the years, but many in the Twitterverse are sad to see it go. “Ugly Betty” quickly became a Trending Topic as the news spread and several tweeps tweeted the show’s stars with confusion and sadness:
