Taylor Swift Target of Post-Grammy Backlash

In 2009, Taylor Swift had one crazy year. From interruptions during awards show speeches, a memorable guest host and musical appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” big wins at the CMAs and AMAs, and recently taking home the coveted Album of the Year award at the Grammys, it is hard to argue that T-Swift has been anything shy of successful. Not everyone, however, is enthralled by the 20-year-old superstar.

The singer has recently encountered backlash via blogs and mainstream publications, especially regarding her Grammy duet with Stevie Nicks. While some went as far as saying Swift didn’t deserve the Grammys she won, many others–from music critics to everyday music fans alike–focused on her performance, saying she was flat and chastised her for demeaning Nicks to merely a back-up singer. Swift’s record label was quick to defend the star by responding that her performances are “not ‘American Idol’. This is not a competition [to see] who can sing the highest note.” According to Entertainment Weekly, that statement by Scott Borchetta, head of Big Machines Records, caused former “Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson to get a bit upset.

Clarkson retorted to Bruchetta’s statement in her blog, voicing that she, too, supports Swift, but that she was offended by the implication that “Idol” serves only to produce artists who can “hit high notes” and that Borchetta should be slow to defend his client by attacking other artists. Clarkson felt he should have owned up to Swift’s sub-par performance rather than putting the singer on a pedestal.
