“Dear John” Beats “Avatar” at Box Office, Sets Record

For the first time since its release, “Avatar” fell to second place at the box office this weekend, according to EW.com. The sci-fi flick, now the highest-grossing film of all time, was beat by the romance “Dear John,” which earned $32.4 million, thanks to its popularity with female viewers. “Avatar” dropped 25 percent from last week and earned $23.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $630 million.

The John Travolta action film “From Paris With Love” earned $8.1 million in its first weekend. Mel Gibson’s “Edge of Darkness” came in fourth with $7 million and the children’s film “Tooth Fairy” came in fifth with $6.5 million.

While “Dear John” earned a record amount for a Super Bowl weekend, the box office overall was doing better a year ago, when films such as “Gran Torino,” “Paul Blart Mall Cop” and “Slumdog Millionaire” were in theaters.

Kreepylady Saw From Paris With Love today. Rather entertaining! Did not expect to have so much fun. Wondering what was up w/Rhys Meyers’ girly tee…
  2. Brian Bush
bbushonline Edge of Darkness was good but nowhere near great. Ray Winstone was very good but the plot was sadly a little poor and too fictitious
  3. Tim Wilson
tgwilson @kimhollenshead Tooth Fairy review: I had REALLY low expectations and was mildly pleasantly surprised.
  4. Michael
Arqitek don’t waste your money on “dear john”. ppl in the audience were laughing at the “sad” parts.
  5. kateyrich
kateyrich @Da7e At least no one can make a sane argument that it means Dear John is better than Avatar. It’s just time, not quality, taking over.
  6. Gerardo Rodriguez
_gerardo Watched #Avatar last night with @liz_perez in 3D. Visuals were amazing, but story even greater. So much more embedded within. Makes me sad.
  7. vito rusmardian
vitorusmardian Just watched from paris with love.. A typical John Travolta kick-ass movie, with jonathan as the spicy add-on.. A nice movie to see :)
  8. Kelssie Smith
KelssieNicole @SparksNicholas I went to see Dear John last night I admit I was disappointed by how much they changed the story, but I still liked it a lot
  9. Stephne Lazarz
