Super Bowl–Commercials And All–Sets TV Record
According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, 106.5 million viewers tuned in to watch the New Orleans Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV, making it the most-watched TV program in U.S. history.
Sunday’s game surpassed the 27-year-old record held by series finale of “M*A*S*H,” which drew 105.97 million viewers–albeit when the nation’s popular was significantly smaller.
And while millions of viewers watched the two best teams in the NFL clash for supremacy, the advertisers brought their best game, providing some of the most creative commercials of the year. Nearly 60 commercials, at $2 million to $3 million per 30 seconds, aired during the game, according to USA Today.
According to USA Today’s Ad Meter, a Snickers commercial featuring Betty White and Abe Vigoda being tackled to the ground during a game of backyard football captured the spot for best-liked commercial.
Other big hits during the night were a pair of Dockers and CareerBuilder back-to-back commercials that featured men in corporate environments wearing nothing but their underpants.
Doritos and Bud Light also had some great commercials and took second and third place in the ranking with ads that saw a vengeful dog place an electric collar on its cruel owner and a man living in a house made entirely out of cans and bottles of Bud Light.
Coca Cola rounded out the top five with an ad that featured a sleepwalker traversing the African plains at night wearing nothing but his…underpants.
The supposedly-controversial Tim Tebow ad sponsored by Focus on the Family flew way under the radar and scored in the bottom quarter among USA Today Ad Meter panelists.
The Twitterverse had mixed reactions about the commercials, but opinions mostly favored the Doritos and Bud Light Ads:

Super Bowl ads of ppl in underwear or Tebow and his mom ? KevinDeveau I just watched every super bowl commercial. Aside from Bud light and Dorrito’s most of them were real snoozers. ifreethought loves that the Focus on the Family/Tim Tebow commercial tied last in views at Super Bowl. Could we call that an aborted marketing effort?![]()
