LIVE-BLOG: OSCARS
The 82nd Annual Academy Awards are about to begin on ABC. This year, the Best Picture category has been expanded from five nominees to ten, in an attempt to draw more viewers and make the ceremony more inclusive. There may be other twists in store, so refresh this page through the show for a complete list of winners along with reactions from Twitter users.
The show has yet to begin, but there are already reactions to the celebrities wandering around on the red carpet:
Greeblemonkey Thanks goodness the ABC pre-show is only a half hour. Any more Kathy Ireland and I would shoot myself. #oscars AprilBraswell @elenadaciuk Oh #JLo looks FABULOUS in that cotton candy pink! #AA82 #Oscars Possessionista I feel bad for statement necklaces. They got one trip to the #Oscars in ‘09 and now they’ve been replaced for small dangle earrings. HAlanScott No No, Sarah Jessica Parker should NOT steal that dress! She’s looks like a pill popping 60’s middle aged mama. #oscars danicalo Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta, great dress. #oscars jenniepperson Oscars: JLo wins best hair and makeup every time. I like her gown. Light-colored big puffy gowns work this season. the59thStBridge SJP’s dress not doing it. And her hair looks like a Pillsbury crescent roll #oscars SCStateOfMynd OMG Cameron Diaz should fire her make-up artist, there’s no reason why you should show up to the Oscars with a bad case of crows feet. SMH
Neil Patrick Harris opened the Oscars with a song and dance number in a sparkly tux. Hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin then descended from the ceiling to crack some jokes and introduce the presenters.
lollipop26 is it always this cheesy ? #oscars Bleakey NPH!!! I love his jacket. #oscars Agent_M Turned on the #Oscars. Big picture of Turner & Hooch and a gay prison joke in the opening minute. Okay, we’ll stick around for a bit. TarynP Loving the 1920’s theme!!!! Pretty feathers. Oh and hello TRUE hosts! #oscars megcabot What is happening to the Oscars? I’m in shock. columbiajames Feather boas and showgirls strutting around Kodak theatre remind me of a Vegas strip show. #oscars raquelc415 Loving how the #oscars are already starting off… The Neil patrick harris surprise was so awesome!! thejohnblog NPH opening for Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin is like The Rolling Stones opening for Nickelback. #oscars
PENELOPE CRUZ PRESENTING BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
WINNER: Christoph Waltz
Sampad #Oscars Christoph Waltz for Inglorious Bastards. Awesome. Always knew when I saw him for that first 15 mins of the movie![]()
radiostaticstar whew, i was fearing the worst from christoph waltz given his last run of acceptance speeches. #oscars marcradix christoph waltz wins the oscar !!! fully deserved ! #oscars charlestrotter Oscars off to a decent but overlong start. Baldwin looks uncomfortable. Congrats to Christoph Waltz, though! Like there was any doubt.![]()
suerobins wow, incredible acceptance speech christoph walz. well crafted and superbly delivered. he set the bar high. #oscars Austin_H2O I love the Oscars as much as I hate them. Even though Christoph Waltz was the only supporting actor nominee I saw, I think he deserved it
STEVE CARRELL AND CAMERON DIAZ PRESENTING BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Winner: “Up”
josephflaherty UP wins a well deserved Oscar. Should still win Best Picture, If a movie that good can’t win, something is wrong with the system. havasulisa I hope “UP” wins a OSCAR 4 The picture of the year! lastyearsman Up was probably the most inevitable oscar of the night. Albeit, deserved just for the first 5 minutes #oscars faychoy Yay for Up! I have at least seen one Oscar film this year. lol
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
Winner: Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett for “The Weary Kind” from “Crazy Heart”
carrie_reed I still think it’s totally nuts that out of ten available best picture slots Crazy Heart wasn’t nominated! iluvDCyes @wehoscott YES YES YES! Crazy Heart was awesome….loved the music drgonzolives Happy with Up, but wanted Fantastic Mr Fox. So happy for Crazy Heart. Love that movie RegularRon The Oscars have been good so far. Good to see “Crazy Heart” get a win for the song. Great soundtrack. #oscars grinand Nobody else I know has seen it… but Crazy Heart is really affecting. Rent it someday. #Oscars
ROBERT DOWNEY, JR. AND TINA FEY PRESENTING BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Winner: “The Hurt Locker”
kristal_bailey Best Original Screenplay goes to The Hurt Locker. Great movie, but wanted Inglorious Basterds to win. Well written in 3 languages. #Oscars BrandonF The reason vets don’t like The Hurt Locker is because the movie’s praise is *based* on its purported “realism.” #Oscars xwen The Hurt Locker won Best Original Screenplay – sorry Tarantino, it was marginally better #oscars comic_junkie The Hurt Locker was great, but I think Inglourious Basterds should’ve won for best script. #oscars
The Oscars then paid tribute to director John Hughes, who passed away in August 2009. Actors like Molly Ringwald and Matthew Broderick, whose career-making roles were in Hughes’ films, came onstage to honor the late director for his career of directing hits like “The Breakfast Club” and “Ferris Bueller.”
jenditchburn Why don’t we ever see ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’ on TV? Always F.Bueller & Bkfst Club. I approve of John Hughes tribute. jodywatley A big fan of John Hughes movies, nice #Oscars montage frelle RT @sthrnfairytale: John Hughes:Wrote films that gave our generation voice, power & understanding. We felt we had a place, because of him. TawnyTucker john hughes was the bomb…rip…no one will ever make movies like him
CAREY MULLIGAN AND ZOE SALDANA PRESENTING BEST SHORT FILM
Winner: “Logorama”
Roofus2099 @rfcmovies Ok. I was at the RFC shorts festival & I didn’t see Logorama. Also I’m pissed that Wallace & Gromit was snubbed. Boo, Academy!! katherine620 I really want to see logorama. Maybe I shall browse around YouTube. linseyagardner Logorama representing design and branding alike with an Academy Award for Best Animated Short! #Oscars bcirce I guess after winning the Oscar the #logorama web site traffic crashed their server. Congratulations an a great win.
CAREY MULLIGAN AND ZOE SALDANA PRESENTING BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT
Winner: “Music by Prudence”
princessvica Congrats to Roger Ross, who just won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject for his “Music by Prudence” lbguy16 Who is the red-headed woman who just Kanye West’d the director of Music by Prudence at the #Oscars? catquinn Did the purple co-director of Music by Prudence just pull a Kanye? #oscars joleenzanuzoski Confused by Music of Prudence redhead Kanye imposter. Prudence would have hopped out of her wheelchair if she could & told her to zip it. runforfun54 Can someone explain what happened during the “Music by Prudence” Oscar speech? PagingMrHerman lol @ that poor director of Music by Prudence. That woman stole his thunder. I thought she was just some random crazy lady at first. #Oscars
CAREY MULLIGAN AND ZOE SALDANA PRESENTING BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT
WINNER: “The New Tenants”
annie__perry The second producer for best action short didn’t even get to say anything because the first took to long. So sad. I’m sorry, old man. Drudoo Best live action, short: new tenance !!!!!! Danish film![]()

BEN STILLER PRESENTING BEST MAKEUP
Winner: “Star Trek”
brynnsamuel I agree ben stiller sux![]()
pixeljae @virtualMags When the Star Trek makeup came up to accept, Ben shouldve pulled out violin and said, “Im staying” Rob3Leo Star Trek won for Best Make Up!! Now that was a great movie!! heavenlytruth @WonderwallMSN: “Aww, Star Trek got an award for makeup. That’s just adorable.” -James Cameron’s inner monologue. BAH HA HA!
JAKE GYLLENHAAL AND RACHEL MCADAMS PRESENTING BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Winner: Geoffrey Fletcher, who wrote “Precious: Based on the Book “Push” by Sapphire”
laurahvogel Happy for Precious’ win but supreme disappointment at what couldve been UITA’s only Oscar. My award goes to @JasonReitman if that counts. Patricialicious @shawnawb Precious is an awesome, awesome, awesome movie. Well worth the watch CharityV @almtalkies I’m sure Precious is a great story, but I avoid anything with too much hype. KreeBeau I lost my first in the ballots! Awesome win by Precious for adapted screenplay – huge upset for Jason Reitman AndrewDignan Precious stole an award from Up in the Air. I’d love to see it return the favor. Not gonna happen, but it’d be nice.
ROBIN WILLIAMS PRESENTING BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Winner: Mo’Nique in “Precious”
fablor Monique!!!! Anyone else would have just been WRONG! johncampea And the second most no brained of the night goes to Monique. Well deserved. Mark my words, Anna Kendrick will be back. jcreportglobal Thinking this is the best moment thus far….Monique you deserve it onealmcknight OMG!! I got chills when Monique won!!! Congrats!!! GOD BLESS YOU!!
SIGOURNEY WEAVER PRESENTING “BEST ART DIRECTION”
Winner: “Avatar”
owlssayhooot Okay, good, Avatar won design. That’s all it deserves, in my opinion. It can be taken off the bracket for best picture now. shawnlevy So “Avatar” and “Hurt Locker” each have one prize in a category in which the other wasn’t nominated. The race is still even. Robheeney Good old Sigourney … she so clearly just said Avatar without seeing who actually won #oscars MrBabyMan Avatar deservedly won for stunning art direction. Should win for cinematography too. Their innovations were awe-inspiring #Oscars Janefonda Hooray that Avatar won for set decoration. It’s about time. They should’ve won for makeup too #oscars
TOM FORD AND SARAH JESSICA PARKER PRESENTING BEST COSTUME DESIGN
Winner: Sandy Powell for “The Young Victoria”
KirstensDesk Hey, I got Costume Design! Period pieces always win. kimberly_lyn The irony that Coco Avant Chanel didn’t win for best costume design isn’t lost on me. #oscars ButtercupD the costume design woman really looks like a costume designer _T_a_y_ Wow the lady who one costume design not only was gorgeous w AMAZING DRESS..but she was SO classy wit her speech. I thunk I’m in love. MsInformation I have not seen anyone win for costume design who dressed right for the Oscars. Lady, you are no Edith Head. #oscars wikimia - SJP is presenting best costume design and her dress seems so badly tailored… Esp that middle seam. Eeek Heart Tom Ford though. #oscars
Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick then presented the awards for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, both of which went to “The Hurt Locker.”
JillFilipovic I will never understand the difference between “Sound Mixing” and “Sound Editing.” #Oscars ConservativeLA #Oscars #clap #tcot #lebowski Best moment so far, wife of Hurt Locker sound editor reaction shots. Freaking love it. natedogreimer looks like i need to watch The Hurt Locker stat! #oscars mgerardi HURT LOCKER sweeps sound awards over AVATAR. Probably meaningless, but encouraging for THL nonetheless. #oscars Zap2ItLost The Sound Mixer from “The Hurt Locker” looks like the German mercenary from “Die Hard.” #oscars achance42 I think it’s fair to say Avatar doesn’t have a chance for Best Picture if it lost Sound Editing and Mixing to Hurt Locker. #oscars dmbosstone Two surprises- Avatar not winning any of the two sounds categories and one film sweeping both (Hurt Locker) #oscars
SANDRA BULLOCK PRESENTING BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Winner: “Avatar”
miranda1901 Ugh I’m tired of Avatar! Anyone else feel this way? #Oscars betsymonty #oscars Avatar for Cinematography? Did they attach crack to the Academy’s ballots this year?! The White Ribbon deserved it! giantlawnmower Best Cinematography – Avatar. These awards, I think we all agree, Avatar deserves. #oscars devincf Why aren’t Pixar movies also nominated for Cinematography if AVATAR can win? FSteven I don’t understand the Set Design and Cinematography awards for Avatar. Hello? It’s all computer generated! popcornreel Avatar win in cinematography not too surprising at all, but “The White Ribbon” should have won.
James Taylor played a cover of The Beatles’ “In My Life,” to the “In Memoriam” tribute to those in cinema who have died in the past year.
drepaj I cannot think of anything more depressing than James Taylor singing my wedding song during the In Memoriam montage. Sorry @AngBurnett. aimee_liz “In Memoriam” always gets me choked up, but add in James Taylor singing the Beatles? Losing it. neeksplace The Acadamy Awards had Michael Jackson in their “in memoriam”. Very nice… verysimple nice in memoriam segment. JT singing helped drown out the inappropriate applause/popularity meter. jasmined Was Farrah Fawcett left out of the #Oscars in memoriam montage? mort3965 The In Memoriam montage should have featured my interest for this award show #oscars dancosta In Memoriam is the only reason to watch the Oscars. Oh, and Steve Martin.
Before the winner for Best Original Score was announced, groups of dancers performed on stage to clips of each of the nominated scores.
rolemommy Can anyone say BORING? I’d so rather be watching Donny Osmond perform one of his Dancing w/the Stars routines. #Oscars nonlinearmind Do I need HD to appreciate these street dancers or am I missing something? #oscars TylerHilton Why are people hip pop dancing and doing the robot to the best score segment on the oscars? Please don’t.
JENNIFER LOPEZ AND SAM WORTHINGTON PRESENTING BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Winner: “Up”
Lady_Patriot Yay again for UP! Confession: I loved that movie, but like Fox & the Hound, I can’t watch it without bawling! #Oscars aimeefriedman Yay Up original score! You got me ahead in my very heated Oscar party pool #oscars KarenSnyderDuke I loved, loved, loved the music of Up. Good choice, I think, Academy. #Oscars hazeliz Nice speach by UP’s Michael Giacchino “If you wanna do something creative, it’s not a waste of time. Get out there and do it” #oscars jgrawrock So excited that Up is getting recognized for it’s brillance! #oscars alexrubens Up deserved that more than anyone. That song is so moving. #oscars
GERARD BUTLER AND BRADLEY COOPER PRESENTING OUTSTANDING VISUAL EFFECTS
Winner: “Avatar”
ShipleyKevin Avatar deserves best visual effects. Really. It all was visual effects. #oscars callie_snyder The more I think about it the more I hope #avatar does not win anything else. That movie wasn’t that great. #oscars coalman987 #oscars District 9 deserved Best Visual Effects because its effects were beautiful, realistic, and they did it for so much less than Avatar fergusheywood OMG Avatar for visual effects! So surprised and happy! #oscars ToddWinNC Avatar may have had more “groundbreaking” visual effects, but Star Trek was by far a better movie overall — and also had great FX. #Oscars TheTradesCast OK, Best Visual Effects for Avatar only sounds bad when you think about District 9 #Oscars
MATT DAMON PRESENTING BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM
Winner: “The Cove”
TimThinksThings No one in my family has heard of any of the Best Documentary films. Docs don’t get enough love #oscars SerendipiYami The Cove wins…I had my eyes closed for a lot of that documentary. Very difficult to watch. #oscars SizzleMel all the documentary movies look really substantial this year. as much as i like Food Inc, i think The Cove deserves it #Oscars MattBinder The Best Feature Documentary category is the first category that has me going “WOW, I want to see all of these”. #oscars Jessica731 So happy that The Cove won best documentary. Hopefully this will give even more attention to this truly tragic issue #oscars
TYLER PERRY PRESENTING BEST EDITING
Winner: “The Hurt Locker”
sabrinel so hurt locker is winning pretty big, pretty happy tht avatar isn’t winning 10+ oscars, sorry to all u fans of it out there coldmilk I betted on Inglourious Basterds but I’m glad The Hurt Locker got this one… #oscars atlfilm365 Considering how many simultaneous cameras they shot some scenes with on THE HURT LOCKER, mad respect for the editing win. #oscars tavallai The Hurt Locker: Intense, solid performances, suspenseful; all for naught due to a reliance on hand-held camera to portray realism. #Oscars DGiant I hate when films I will never see (Hurt Locker) win awards. #oscars Don’t begrudge them – just have no interest in it.
PEDRO ALMODOVAR AND QUENTIN TARANTINO PRESENTING FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Winner: “El Secreto de Tus Ojos” (”The Secret of Their Eyes” – Argentina)
adeniro You know the one category where it would actually make sense to expand it to 10 would be best Foreign Language film. #oscars TheMovieGod Best Foreign is NEVER what you think it’ll be. Makes you wonder if voters even watch them or just choose the coolest title. #oscars TiffanyWinman Best Foreign Film goes to “The secret in their eyes” (Argentina). I love watching these films after the #Oscars help select them. roninspirit “I would like to thank the Academy for not considering Na’vi a foreign language.” Come on people, that was funny! And no one lauged. #Oscars SaintMort The Orchestra cut off kinda makes me upset because it tends to happen to the foreign film and short film directors #Oscars bgluckman I’m SHOCKED neither The White Ribbon nor A Prophet won for Best Foreign Language Film. #oscars
KATE WINSLET PRESENTING BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Winner: Jeff Bridges for “Crazy Heart”
ExtraordMommy Way to go Jeff Bridges – you only had to wait 39 years to get that statue. #oscars miacupcake I can’t believe Jeff Bridges won. Over Morgan Freeman. And the dude from Hurt Locker, whom i heard was AMAZING. #oscars wombwarrior I loved Jeff’s reaction when he realized he was getting a standing ovation. =) #oscars wgfinley Sorry fellas but Jeff Bridges was owed this one for a while. #Oscars got it right again. crossfac3 Yay Jeff Bridges! But why does his speech get to run longer than everyone elses? Unfair.. #oscars eugeniedfranval i feel for jeremy renner though. he gave a really stellar perfomance. it was just jeff bridges time, dude. #oscars EricStangel Oscars – Ladies and gentlemen, please hold your applause until Jeff Bridges names everyone in Hollywood… mfmusic After that speech, I’m convinced that Jeff Bridges is actually The Dude in real life #Oscars jaredhogan jeff bridges also gets the award for worst acceptance speech of the night. #oscars LacyMB Awww, Jeff Bridges. Personally, I would have gone for Colin Firth or maybe Clooney, but the #oscars love some meta. Well done.
SEAN PENN PRESENTING BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Winner: Sandra Bullock for “The Blind Side”
JacobAnderson3D #Oscars Sandra Bullock?! Isn’t that that actress from those films…? You know the ones? Yeah, them. She’s rubbish. idancohen first part of academy awards interesting and right. second part – horrible! like… what?!? sandra? like really? #oscars rkweblog Sandra Bullock wins…good choice! Blind Side great film… #oscars BenWiddicombe Sandra Bullock beating Meryl Streep as Best Actress is like Helen Hunt beating Judi Dench: It makes the #Oscars irrelevant veronicawebb #Oscars. This year I really got the feeling that if you work hard you have a fair shot @ getting an Oscar. Things are starting to shift. jenvargas I expected Sandra Bullock would win & I wish Gabby would’ve got it, but damn if Sandra isn’t freakin’ classy. Congrats. #oscars debontherocks Well, that was a hattrick of an acceptance speech. Who doesn’t love Sandra Bullock now?#oscars #blogher bonnevivante Sandra Bullock’s speech has to be one of my favorites, ever. Generous, complimentary, moving, funny. Verklempt here. Pass the Puffs. #oscars AdenaDeMonte Sandra Bullock reminds me a lot of Julia Roberts. Always plays the same character, but people love that character so people love her #Oscars
BARBRA STREISAND PRESENTING BEST DIRECTOR
Winner: Katherine Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker”
dnrevel Best Dir: Catherine Bigelow wins! Yay, fabulous Streisand’s back! Great to see her. Great to have these women rocking the #Oscars RoseBlueTinted As a hopeful female director, its inspiring and well deserving to see that a female director has finally won the Best Director at the Oscars cassyfiano Let’s be honest, if Kathryn Bigelow wasn’t a woman, then Hurt Locker wouldn’t have won Best Picture or Best Director. #Oscars GalsGotMoxie So proud to have finally gotten to see a woman win as Best Director. And for a taut, gripping, important action movie. #oscars. DaveFriedel A woman has won Best Director for the first time in history. Perhaps we *are* progressing as a society afterall. #Oscars shinyspecialone Honestly, I’m just glad that the first Academy Award winning female director didn’t make some shitty chick flick. #oscars #dreamscometrue JustKateGia The Hurt Locker sweeps and I DON’T MIND, great film! Best Director…Kathryn Bigelow! Adore. Adore!!!!!! #Oscars
TOM HANKS PRESENTING BEST PICTURE
Winner: “The Hurt Locker”
attraxion Ah, ‘The Hurt Locker’ takes both best picture and best director! Sweet relief. I almost cannot believe Pandora didn’t win! #oscars filmnerdjamie If you think Avatar should have won Picture or Director, u haven’t seen enough movies last year. #oscars ROOK4PRESIDENT The #Oscars are like the #Grammys, they never get it right…how is there a better picture from last year than #Avatar? It was breathtaking bobmerlotti I’ve said it before and it still applies: Best picture should go to the film where they kill the most Nazis. #Oscars morganspeck I simply can not believe that The Hurt Locker won Best Picture. What a travesty. #oscars CowHatNinja Would have preferred District 9 or Up to win best picture, haven’t seen Hurt Locker but REALLY not interested in war films >.> #oscars _grissjames Can’t believe Avatar didn’t win best picture… My confidence in the Oscars is sinking. seanduregger Really enjoyed the Oscars tonight. Loved Martin & Baldwin as hosts. The Hurt Locker as Best Picture is well deserved. One of my favs of 09. denverflyer No Best Picture for “Avatar.” Cameron will have to live with the hollow victory only a $2,000,000,000 box office gross can bring. #Oscars cgp99 Hurt Locker wins Best Picture at the Oscars, great movie but should have been Avatar. Would have like to seen Up in the Air win something
Thanks for reading our live blog. The Academy Awards are now over, but Twitter users continue to react:
bridgebldr Watching Twitter made watching #oscars much more interesting this year (& program itself was exceptionally uninteresting) tinadupuy The Academy Awards should not hand out Oscars for editing until they learn how to edit the Academy Awards. THISISDAVERYAN I wish one of the girls fell on their stupid dresses at the oscars, if I go to award shows ever I’m showing up in jeans SarahLister No surprises to speak of. Didn’t take long for both the…gracious hosts…and their painfully scripted jokes to get on my nerves. #Oscars pinupkelly The Oscars were good! Kinda upset that Precious & Inglourious Basterds didn’t take home more awards, but at least Avatar didnt win Best Pic. dianapop Little disappointed, but VERY predictable. Oscars have long since stopped being a compass to quality, Americans just award movies they like. Bandrik Spent the time tonight playing Band Hero with friends instead of watching the Oscars. I looked at the list & satisfied with the selections. AuraFedora I think that this was one of the better ceremonies in a long time-and I was skeptical earlier. #oscars helene_smith @markpvenema The Oscars hosts/humor was the worst EVER this year. so bad that the actors in the audience didn’t know how to react!… IMO
