Tonight’s elimination episode of “American Idol” was the most exciting of the season so far, with Michael “Big Mike” Lynche eliminated, only to then receive the one and only “judges’ save.” The studio audience burst into a deafening cheer at this surprising save.

Tuesday night, the “American Idol” Top 9 contestants performed songs from the Lennon-McCartney songbook. Lynche’s version of “Eleanor Rigby” was deemed too theatrical by Simon Cowell. The other four judges, however, loved it, with Randy Jackson comparing it to something from the hit TV show “Glee.” Still, Lynche ended up in the bottom three with Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly.

After a powerful performance of Maxwell’s “This Woman’s Work,” the judges decided to give “Big Mike” a pardon. When Cowell told Lynche, “See you next week,” Twitter exploded with reactions to the save, with “Big Mike” becoming the number two trending topic for an hour after the show. Most fans were tweeting their support for Big Mike and joy over the decision to keep him another week, though some are questioning if the judges should have held onto the save for another performer.
