“Avatar” Wins Again With DVD and Blu-ray Sales Records

The Earth Day release of James Cameron’s astronomical blockbuster film “Avatar” has thus far yielded $6.7 billion in worldwide DVD sales, Variety.com reports.

“Avatar” lovers worldwide expressed their desire to return to Pandora by helping the movie to shatter both DVD and Blu-ray sales records, previously held by “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and “The Dark Knight,” respectively. First-day sales saw “Avatar” rocket to the top of the record books with customers snatching up 1.7 million DVD copies and 1.5 million Blu-ray discs.

The version of “Avatar” available now is 2-D with a few extra features. Twentieth Century Fox is planning on a November re-release of the 2-D disc including a great deal more “Avatar” goodness in the form of extra footage and special features, and a 3-D version is set to hit shelves in 2011.

As a testament to the global popularity of “Avatar,” Pandora and the Na’vi, the Twitterverse seems ready to explode with excitement as tweets about the film and its release continue to abound:
