Crisis averted! The Hollywood sign, the age-old symbol of the entertainment industry, has been rescued from the sticky clutches of land developers by none other than Playboy founder Mr. Hugh Hefner, who forked over a hefty $900,000 to save the landmark that he says “represents Hollywood dreams,” People.com reports. Back in 1978 Hefner had also donated to help repair the sign.

The towering white-lettered icon and 138 acres of land behind it had been the planned area for a new crop of luxury mansions. Before the developers could take over, however, a nonprofit land conservation group was given the chance to save the sign. The price? Oh, a measly $12.5 million.

Hefner said he knew the nonprofit group was trying to raise the money, but the decision to fork over the $900 grand came when he got wind that the group was short on both money and time: with about a week and  a half to go before the April 30 deadline, the group still needed nearly $1 million.
